I am obviously new here. With that said, I do not want to bother you all with a "hi, new here" post anymore than this sentence.
I purchased the dev kit 2 for my son and I to work on. I have a background in programming and my son just turned 14 and wants to begin the process of learning to love programming. He is an avid gamer; so this should be a real eye opener experience for him delving into the depths of what it takes to make great video games. It will be an eye opener for me as well regarding the graphics and vr world. My programming background consists largely of scripting, website and web application development with database management. I have coded in c++ and other object oriented languages for years but not recently as most of my work is web based with scripting languages such as asp and aspx.
With that said, I have not delved into graphics environments. Is there a preferred one I can get started on with my son? We placed the order a few days ago but both of us are fast learners and I figured the backorder would get us the kit near the end of November. However, we should be able to start development before it comes in, and learn the ropes. What would you all suggest for a high iq father son duo to begin this journey. I want to start off with a roller coaster simulation. I figure that would be an inspiring and fun way to begin this. Then, we have plans to create a vr social media to meet other oculus users face to vr face. But you got to start somewhere. Then, a vr internet. We have big plans, big ideas, and are driven to make a considerable contribution to the vr world.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Unity free has just been announced to now support VR so that's a great place to start, as many great VR games have come from this engine it has been proven pretty solid. Also for I think around $20 a month you can get UE4 (Unreal engine 4) which also is heavily supporting VR tools not to mention on the cutting edge of high end visuals. Hope that helps and gets you guys going as it sounds like a fun project.
