It seems like we'll get:

The new Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3000 series cards will reportedly offer more VRAM on all cards, so we could see: 

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 - 12GB 
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 - 12GB 
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti - 16GB.

Maybe reduced power consumption due to 7nm. And maybe the best - if it's true:

NVIDIA is reportedly set to offer its next-gen GeForce RTX 3000 serieds at cheaper prices than the current-gen GeForce RTX 2000 series, which would be interesting. NVIDIA faced considerable backlash with the pricing on its GeForce RTX 2000 series, even though they still sold like hotcakes a price reduction is always welcome.

The 3090 I bid on now sold for $2,751. It's totally crazy out there. 

I'm glad I have the 2080 ti to keep me sane until these prices drop back to normal. 

I really regret not camping out for a 3090 at Microcenter on launch. It certainly would have been worth it. 

The G2 demands more power. And MSFS 2020 demands it. I guess I'll have to wait or get lucky on the wait list.

You can get a GPU if you try a little bit. Just sign up for an account on all of the sites you're willing to buy one at, start using inventory tracking sites and follow the twitter accounts that follow inventory too. That's all I did and I got a 3090 FE at retail from Best Buy in about two weeks after trying to get one. Now you're going to miss out a lot but you will get one eventually. 

Doing what I said above I was able to get me parts for my new build with a 5800X and a 3090 FE in about 3 weeks.

That or you can buy a pre-built PC with the GPU you want and sell off the rest. Nvidia prioritizes OEMs over normal people like you and me. Two of my friends have bought pre-built PCs just for the GPU because they could get the entire PC for what the GPUs are going for on Ebay and Amazon. One got a PC with a 3080 and the other got a PC with a 3090.

The longer you wait the more it will cost you because of the shortage of electrical components right now.

Well, Nvidia is apparently going to try to curb crypto mining on gaming GPU's by releasing cards for crypto ming without video ports...like some AIB's have already done... And at the same time cripple the mining speed of gaming GPU's through software drivers. Hopefully this will eventually bring the price of GPU's back in line with MSP's.

interesting dilema nvida have put themselves into, and is it even legal to gimp hardware once they have sold it to the consumer, i don't think this will go well for them.

I do think Nvidia can do what they want, maybe miners will invent new drivers, lol.
The failure of Nvidia to deliver is crippling the whole gaming industry, no one can move on as the majority simply cannot upgrade. I think crippling their cards for miners should have been done a long time ago. 2c.

As i understood it, it's only their new lines of cards that will have the "cripple" feature (currently 3060). So of course, cards that are already in the hands of consumers cannot be crippled now, in that case people could just avoid updating anyway.

I like the decision, but I'm afraid these altcoin freaks will still prefer gamer cards like 3070 and 3080, because they can be used for mining and then sold back to gamers, unlike the pure miner cards which will be useless in a year or two.

I can just sit on the sidelines and hope ethereum prices crash soon or that they move away from GPU mining like bitcoin has done many many years ago.

^^I suspect Nivida will only be altering the RTX 3060 card range and everyone else already sitting with a RTX70/80/90 will continue as normal.

I understand that Nvidia will be tweaking the actual silicon to slow the mining capability down and although existing owners of cards, wanting to mine, will be able to retain the old drivers, anyone buying a card for mining in the future is likely to be risking getting one containing the new "half-speed" silicon. 

Hopefully that will be a  risk too far for miners and they will buy the promised Nvidia specialist mining cards instead.

Even more hopefully, for the souls currently trying in vain to get one, the 3080s and 3090s will also get new silicon built in.   Then all the gamers will have to worry about are the scalpers.

That would be great. Mining has always been the biggest part of the problem. Nvidia would be smart to do what you say they are doing. I think Nvidia knows if the average gamer can't get a card than it could mean a bleaker future for them eventually. There is an old saying necessity is the mother of invention. If gamers can't get cards they will find another way. For example shadow pc which is still in the beta stages.
