It seems like we'll get:

The new Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3000 series cards will reportedly offer more VRAM on all cards, so we could see:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 - 12GB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 - 12GB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti - 16GB.

Maybe reduced power consumption due to 7nm. And maybe the best - if it's true:

NVIDIA is reportedly set to offer its next-gen GeForce RTX 3000 serieds at cheaper prices than the current-gen GeForce RTX 2000 series, which would be interesting. NVIDIA faced considerable backlash with the pricing on its GeForce RTX 2000 series, even though they still sold like hotcakes a price reduction is always welcome.

So what to do whilst awaiting on my replacement 3090 FTW3 Ultra?

Well can't game till it arrives later this afternoon - had a message from MS this morning in Windows Update that my PC was all good to go for Windows 11. So I downloaded the install assistant and off I went.

Yep I am now running Windows 11. I like early adopter stuff anyways lol. Took about 45 minutes and all appears well - course can't game just yet.

I did have to go back in and take power management off all my USB peripheral devices again. I hate how MS keeps putting it back on after big updates.

I am now officially on Windows Version 21H2.

You're the courageous one 😮 - Looking forward to follow your Win11 journey! 🤓

Im on Windows 11 also, havent had any issues. Thats not to say there arent any i just havent hit em yet. Usually safest with windows to wait for the first patch.

This was really interesting, although my "nerd alert" spider sense did tingle a bit, lol:

That's exactly why I leave my thermal pads to Asus and I'm not going to think I'm smarter that Asus' engineers.

The most effective thermal pads got the mem temp down a lot - but transferred the heat to the gpu, or made the gpu a lot hotter. So thermal pads are complicated. Don't try to fix it if you really have no clue how you're affecting other components. If you fix component A, then components B and C may be in trouble, lol.

So 3090 Ti is coming - some have a modded version cunsuming up to nearly 1300 watts - seems insane. It's only expected to be 5% faster than a 3090 - not sure the 3090 Ti makes much sense, we'll see. More info on that 1300 watts consuming card here:

I will be staying with my EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra, no Ti for me - no way.

I have my good old rules - I'll buy my next gpu when I really need the performance and when I can get at least 100% more performance. In order to lift all games using motion smoothing at least one notch, lol.

If a standard 3090 Ti is only 5% faster than a non-oc'ed RTX 3090, then my factory oc'ed 3090 is probably so close to a normal 3090 Ti that it'll be close to impossible to consciously experience any difference...

Also I don't like using extreme amounts of power to get a gpu running - the RTX 3090 was against my religion, but I only use VR for maybe 1-2 hours a day, so I thought that my power consumption won't affect the planet too much.

Unfortunately, there have been rumors of series 40 (RTX 4080 etc) being extremely power hungry too:

https://www.xtremegaminerd.com/flagship-rtx-4000-series-will-consume-even-more-power/

I really think this is the wrong signal to send for a greener planet. Kinda a sign of weakness if AMD or Nvidia can't get more speed out of new gpus without having to drastically increase power consumption. 2c.

The RTX 3050 8GB launched today - really not very interesting - performance is much similar to a non-oc'ed GTX 1080, maybe even slightly lower than a GTX 1080:

Compared to the GTX 1080 from 2016, the RTX 3050 does comsume about 40W less:

The card may of course be of interest if it can be found for $250 - but if you can't find it for less than $500, maybe better getting a cheaper used GTX 1080 or a RTX 2060. 2c.

The RTX 3090 Ti has arrived, but we can do this the quick way:

relative-performance_3840-2160.png

So about 10% faster than the RTX 3090, but the MSI RTX 3090 Ti Suprim is slightly oc'ed for the boost clock. But there's no such thing as a free lunch, and those 10% are the most expensive power lunch I've ever seen:

power-gaming.png

So 32% more power for just 10% more performance - at that's about 115 more watts. Again, this is compared to the plain vanilla 3090, my RTX 3090 is already oc'ed by Asus and has a power limit of 480 watts - so depending on your 3090 card, the 3090 Ti may or may not be about 10% faster. Maybe it'll only be like 5% faster...

More here:

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/msi-geforce-rtx-3090-ti-suprim-x/

MSRP is $2,000 - and 2,200 for oc'ed models like the MSI Suprim. Real world price may go beyond $3,000 - we'll see.

With Series 40 probably arriving later this year, the 3090 Ti seems too much, too late and really nothing but a bad idea. Sure I'd love more performance for Lone Echo 2, but I need something twice as fast as the RTX 3090 to be happy - 10% faster will not make any significant difference, if any at all. 2c.
