O(h my!)LED... The dirty secret nobody told me

Hi Guys,
I was lucky to get my DK2 early like many of you guys. Something that I didn't expect was how badly black/light smears with the new OLED screen. I was walking around the Millenium Falcon last night somewhat disappointed. For the uninitiated, the OLED screen has a terrible ghosting problem when you have a transition of black to (anything not black). When I say terrible... it is truly, extremely terrible. Not just a little annoying, but a show stopping type of terrible (IMHO).

To illustrate the problem more easily just walk into the house in Tuscany and go over to the fireplace. Now move your head around while looking at the fireplace. You'll see it ghost like crazy. Now imagine a mostly dark environment and doing the same thing... woah!

So while I still am still coming to grips with this revelation (that no early reviewers mentioned as a big issue by the way), is this it for OLED? Is this the best OLED technology can muster? I can't see this going out the door in CV(anything) with this type of ghosting.

I gave away my DK1 before I got my DK2 and now kind of regret it. 😞

Is this really new news to you? Have you been browsing this forum at all in the last week?

No you're right... I knew there was 'something' of course. I've been reading up on everything Oculus constantly for years now.

I just didn't expect this level of ghosting, honestly. The way all the reviewers were going on and on about how great OLED is I expected more. I certainly wasn't ready for the scale of the problem.

What I'm most afraid of though is this (to me at least) puts the CV1 way out... a year or more. This technology (OLED) is a complete dead end if it ghosts like this.

If it's fixable with a software release I'll be happy. But it better be fixed 100% or you're basically going to disappoint the many types of games that rely on dark scenes (Space, Horror, Anything that is at night, etc).

It's not that bad and a fix is on the way soon. Is there really a need to start a thread just to harp about it?

When I first heard all the commotion, when I got mine I went to Tuscany and looked up and moved my head to get the smear. Yep, it is there but not really even that noticeable. Especially with a fix on the way, this really is a mountain out of a molehill.

It's also a development kit. Not a retail product. If OVR decided not to even try to fix it, I'd be fine with that.

If you bought it as a retail product, you probably made a mistake if you expected it to be perfect.
But... but... but... I just NEED to know about the Baba! The Baba has me hypmotized!

I am hoping the smearing is fixed by software but the thing worrying me is the horizontal FOV or maybe they call it vertical. I can see black lines on the left and right which seriously affects presence for me. I feel like I am looking out of a box. I have not had a lot of time with it yet so I don't want to jump the gun, but at the moment I thinking this panel / lenses was a mistake. I am waiting for my new PC but so far I felt more presence with the DK1 and much preferred the FOV/Lenses.

(btw, ebone, you are rude)

I wasn't being rude I am being serious when I wonder how he could have missed this when it has been the BIGGEST thing that I've seen on the forums for the last week.

You said you agree completely with Talon1? EVERYBODY agrees with him.

I don't think you were rude and I don't agree with him. I think this whole thread is redundant and paints a misleading picture of the DK2.

Had he read the other threads he might have seen this issue is probably put to bed and only waiting on a software update.

Why do we need another complaint thread about the black smearing?

It's a development kit. It is not a polished or finished product.

If you bought it thinking it was, you made a mistake.

It's purpose is to be a platform and test bed for developers.

Tuscany doesn't show the problem very well, maybe it doesn't have any deep blacks. Try the Falcon demo.

Why? This will either be completely fixed or greatly reduced in an upcoming software update.

What is the purpose of bleating about it over and over and over?

It does not affect the functioning as a development kit whatsoever. OVR knows about it, has a fix ready, and there is nothing that can be done about it until you get the update.

I'm out.

Agreed and there is another thread going into a lot of detail on it and possible fixes, but if you wanted to actually see the effect the Falcon demo is one of the worst ones affected.

You guys... I knew I was going to get harassed a bit. I'm a fan too. I'm a HUGE FAN... Oculus needs to hear this sort of stuff, otherwise we're just a bunch of yes men fan boys. We are their testers too.

If you haven't tried the Falcon demo then you do not understand. Go try it and come back to the forum and tell us it's a minor issue.

The technology that is the underpinning of the whole shebang is not working. It has me concerned. Unless it's fixed completely OLED as a technology for the Oculus Rift CV is shot. Nobody will accept it. It's not a small issue.

If I were a developer of a space sim game I'd be worrying like crazy right now.

I havn't even noticed it to be honest. Been too amazed at the experience of being in another world/place. I noticed there's certain types of OCD people who love to nitpick and look at every pixel/distortion and it bugs the hell out of them. Im not 1 of those people, I dont even notice the 'screen door' or whatever it is. lol

Yup. Certain people on this forum who think they are doing oculus a favor by trying to brow beat and intimidate people who post about issues they are having are doing Oculus no favors and make this forum feel like a fanboy cesspool instead of a place you can come to discuss problems and help to find resolutions. Frankly its obnoxious idiotic childish and down right bad for oculus to allow this type of "fanboy troll" to run roughshod over those who are experiencing issues.
