I think it has more to do with disorientation and a loss of "location/direction" with the outside world. He probably didn't realize how far, in his actual room, he was about to jump. His knowledge of the distance between the floor board and the TV were skewed once he was in the headset. It's similar to how I forgot the distance between me and the ceiling the one time I punched the hell out of my ceiling fan when executing a slam dunk in VR Basketball.
