Oculus Forums versus Oculus subreddit

Recently I started following the Oculus subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/) and so far I am very pleased.

I like that the Top Rift games list https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/5163u4/your_top_10_rift_games_with_ratings/
is more inclusive because it includes games such as The Solus Project which is on Steam but not the Oculus Store.

Additional, so far I get the impression that the Oculus subrredit has more technically minded people and less lamers who want to scream at Oculus that games suck or are a ripoff or that they better support Windows 7 or else and so forth. There also appears to be a lot of useful announcements on the Oculus subrredit that are maybe diluted with lots of uninteresting posts on the Oculus forums.  Anyway, maybe my first impressions are way off. What do others think? What are the pros and cons of each?

It sounds like Reddit has become the "Official" oculus forum, rather than the oculus forum.  We don't get any(Or many) official announcement, they all are put on Reddit.

Too bad I hate reddit, might have to move over there anyway.

/r/oculus has only just recently started getting better really. I stopped using it for a few months because there was so much hate and negativity over there, I've only started posted again now.

Yes the sub-reddit can give you lots more information quickly and tech news etc which is the reason I visit it but these forums feel more like a community which is also great!

Your going to get people complaining anywhere on the internet, you cant avoid it, luckily on reddit things like you mention get downvoted and you'll never see it on the front page(well most of the time anyway.)

Visit both and get the best of both worlds and just ignore the things that get on your nerves, that's what I do 🙂

@TwoHedWlf why do you hate reddit? I have been living under a rock I guess because I have only recently been following reddit. I am not not even registered with reddit. Do you have an overall complaint or is it more directed at certain subreddits. What's better about the Oculus Forums?

Mostly the general format and the volume of posts makes it very difficult to read.  Maybe would be better with more time getting used to it.

This kinda topic has come up before. It is very common, and should almost be expected, for "official forums" to maintain an average citizen type of community, backed up a handful of staff members. This has been the case for just about every major development studio, including Blizzard Entertainment.

Places like Reddit and Something Awful purposely try to create an "exclusive elitist" mindset in order to attract business owners and developers. As I've mentioned several times before, I saw this happen as early as the Diablo 1 days when the Blizzard dev's frequented the "Odgen's Tavern" forum. Another example is Pillars of Eternity, where Josh Sawyer has his own Megathread on the Something Awful forums, yet barely makes an appearance on the PoE general forums.

I don't consider it a bad thing. People need that exclusive feeling when they put so much work in to something. This is the Information Age anyway, so any important news will be put in our hands regardless of which forum one is dedicated to visiting. I find Reddit to be total and complete garbage, but that's just me.

I like the forums better. Just because I find everyone around here gets a voice vs the reddit forums. If you say something no one likes or cares about it kind of just goes away (in a way that's nice) but at the same time It's fun having small talk with people as well. Most of the threads around here get lost after a page or two, so even on here things do go away after a while if it isn't worth talking about.

I have used the reddit forums for some help in the past for software/meeting people, but always felt kind of creepy:) on here I meet a ton of good people like Frozen, 3eye, TwoheadWlf, OpticKing, Zenbane, cyber, Techy111, Zoomie, Shadowmask72, LZoltowski, and many more others (I could go on for days). All been super fun to talk with and chill out after a long day in IT.
