Compared to the Vive, the Rift has a simple problem: It just doesn't (really) know where the floor is. While Vive uses a absolute coordinate system, the Rift just uses a relative one. The floor is on the Vive - well - where the floor is. On the Rift, it's basically a matter of configuration and the current circumstances.
That simple fact is a constant source of anger. People are stuck in the ceiling (Oculus Dreamdeck) or are simple not as tall as in real life which is highly distracting because you can feel the real ground on you feet. Sure, you can configure the current height of the active player but that simply doesn't work in real life. If it would be no problem, I wouldn't write this post now.
There are two simple thinkable solutions:
a) Just let the user put the Rift down on the floor during camera setup and save this value.
b) Just ask for the height of the table the camera is standing on and calculate the floor height
This shouldn't depend on if you started the app while standing or while sitting. It's just an absolute value and the Rift should know it. This would work for all people, no need to re-run the whole setup process each time.
Thank you 🙂
EDIT: The setup process is IHMO very confusing here. It tells you to 'stand up and take on the headset' first. Then the camera plays it's scanning-animation, in most cases complaining about not being tilted the right way. In the background, it shows a video of the user sitting on his desk, tilting the sensor down. If the user does exactly that, the floor position can't be calculated the right way. Why not simply putting down the Rift on the floor instead?
PS: Oh, and please make an official recommendation about which button to use for recentering as there is no standard yet, even after two years. I was hoping for a dedicated button on the CV1 but a small tab against the headset itself should do the job, too (should result in a easy-detectable, short peak of the motion sensor).
PPS: Italics seem to not work when posting

FlyInside FSX solved the recenter problem VERY nicely, detecting a light tap on the headset to recenter. It works very well... well done to Dan Church the developer.
Recenter is available via the Universal Menu, but that breaks the immersion.
