Lol the thing is not out yet and people already want next-gen chips in it ... oh boy.

Don't forget that the chip can run faster due to thermals and power delivery in the HMD than their mobile phone counterparts.
Core i7-7700k @ 4.9 Ghz | 32 GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance @ 3000Mhz | 2x 1TB Samsung Evo | 2x 4GB WD Black
ASUS MAXIMUS IX HERO | MSI AERO GTX 1080 OC @ 2000Mhz | Corsair Carbide Series 400C White (RGB FTW!)

Be kind to one another 🙂

Ok, just read some topics (god i was away for long....)
To put it simple, Oculus quest is a powered up version of the go, or we can call it a portable rift.
It can run in theory all the game that are actually in the rift library but scaled down by a lot (5 or more times inferior resolution) wich i have to say... wile i wont like that in a "home envirorment" if that allow me and 3 or 4 friend to go meeting somewere and play together dead and buried... well that is sold for me...

Considering the Quest isn't coming out for another 6-9 months, I would have liked at least current gen (845 is already available in at least 16 phones from 9 companies), not last year's gen (835 was used in phones released in mid 2017, like the Sony Xperia XZ Premium).

They said no pc... so this is not the "rift 2" is a more powerfull version of the go...?
I'm saying this because we all know some vr game simply can't be run without a pc...
I need explanations o_o

A less powerful Rift.

A wireless less powerful Rift.

Better lenses too apparently.
Big PC, all the headsets, now using Quest 3

I just want the 845 in there.

I want it to be cheaper.

I see all of this craving for better VR as a good thing.

I wonder how they're going to have enough left over resources?
The Lenovo Mirage Solo and Vive Focus both use the 835 as well.
But the Quest has twice as many camera feeds to process, higher resolution to render and two 6dof controllers to track (compared to one 3dof on the Solo and one formerly 3dof but now 6dof on the Focus). I wonder how Oculus are going to deal with that in hardware or software.

The Lenovo Mirage Solo and the Vive Focus don't have Carmack. That's how lol 😄 😄 😄

Well, I want a pony and a stable. lol

That is not how hardware design works @kojack, they have been working on the thing for 2 years or more (845 came out in Dec 2017), that's is not even a year ago. They already started building the components, thermal design, power delivery etc on what was then available. For them to change it up mid product cycle would mean delays and a complete reimagining of the device) A change in power delivery etc (it's like a domino effect.)

Phones have faster iterations as they are easier devices to manufacture. This is a completely new device for Oculus.

Every new NASA mission runs on technology from 4-5 years ago, why? Because it takes them that long to build everything to an exact delicate specification, changing a component mid design/build because a better one just came out would mean rebuilding from scratch as all tolerances would have to be re-done.

I see everyone complaining about Snapdrgon 835 instead of 845, but is there that much of a leap between the two? (I have literally no idea, that's why I'm asking ^^).

As for performance and how they'll manage it, you should watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvMQUz0g_Tk

At 5:50, they start to explain how they simplify the graphics to port a game, without much loss (well, light effects are definitely noticibly worse, but textures and meshes are kept relatively well).
There is also another topic where they talk about how to optimize a mobile app (I haven't watched it though).

Anyway, that video kind of worried me. If even Dead&Buried needs that much optimizing, it seems it's gonna be real hard to get games with more complex graphics... That said, graphics aren't everything. As long as the ported games work correctly, I personally have no complaints.

For another 50$ - about 30% more GPU performance and 20% more CPU performance. That's a big enough increase to cover most of the overhead issues that we see with current GO.

Maybe, but an 845 doesn't change the pin layouts so that isn't 100% true. Thermerals designs don't really change unless the chip just runs super hot - but we know for a fact it doesn't so you either see gains in your thermals or they just stay the same. Power might change - but not that much. Again - it's a optimise design, not a full rework cpu/gpu here. Really it would be a drop in replacement for the most part. If they did over overclock - you still see a bigger gain from going to a 845 and over clock that as well. I mean if they did push it - that be a 50% performance boost over GO. You can get an idea within a few days if the cooling is going to be good enough. I mean we have people overclocking the 2080 less than 6 hours - so we're not talking like it takes years or months to know.

Quest is easier to manufacture than an Iphone -- just saying... I open up a rift so I know what is in there:)
