Oculus Rift Touch graphics card for Dell XPS8700

Can anyone help me/recommend a good card for my Dell XPS8700 Windows 10 i7 3.4GhZ with 24G of RAM?  The machine meets all requirements except for the graphics card, and rather than get an entry level card I'd like to get something very good but not excessive (middle of the road?  room for growth?  should be good for a long time?).  Hoping to find someone else with a similar machine that has had good luck.  I read somewhere if you get one of the higher end cards, you need to upgrade the power supply, which I can do, I am familiar with PCs.  Thanks very much for any help you can provide!

You've got a few issues with that machine, from a few quick google searches.

1) That PSU is probably not going to have the proper connectors for any newer graphics card, so you will need to replace it.   You said you can do that, so that's solved.

2) I couldnt find case dimensions for that case, but it looks awful small, most new GFx cards are HUGE!

3) Cooling! I found at least one post saying that the addition of a new card caused the overall case temps to climb quite high, so you're going to want to figure out a way to get some extra air both into, and out of that case, if you can.

All that being said:
I have heard rumors that the 11x series Nvidia cards will be coming out "soonish" ie, mid-year, so you may consider waiting until then.  Usually, the introduction of a new "flagship" line causes the current models to drop in price quite drastically.

If you want to have 'room to grow' you're going to need to be in the 10x series, at least.  the 9x are great cards, (I still use a 980ti), but, its also coming up on ... er.. 4 years old? Something.  Its showing its age.

I would stay away from the *50's, like the 1050, and probably even stay away from the 1060 -  1070 or 80 are going to be your best performance for price cards.  Again - if you can wait, it may be well worth it.

I can only speak to nvidia, as I've been team green so long I have completely lost touch with what ATI/AMD is doing.

GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB should be considered the realistic minimum for a generally good experience. I think a Vega 56 or GTX 1070 should be your target though. And as mentioned above, you may need to replace the PSU. The width of the case looks fine for a discrete GPU but the length might be an issue. You might have to take a hacksaw to it and cut out a little slot. It isn't a big deal, just a nuisance. A typical graphics card is about 27cm long.

A note on pricing, don't get gouged! The MSRP of both the GTX 1070 and RX Vega 56 is only $400-$500 USD.

Thanks guys - I just ordered the GTX 1070 ti from Amazon for $629.  Prices still seem pretty high overall, but that was the best I could find with reasonable (?) effort.  Not sure what I need for a power supply or how to go about that, was thinking maybe when I got the card the instructions would help?  Thanks again!  Can't wait to get the Oculus going!

I would suggest a 550W 80 PLUS PSU, something like

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CP-9020097-UK-PLUS-Power-Supply/dp/B00TE4XSMA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qi...
Core i7-7700k @ 4.9 Ghz | 32 GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance @ 3000Mhz | 2x 1TB Samsung Evo | 2x 4GB WD Black
ASUS MAXIMUS IX HERO | MSI AERO GTX 1080 OC @ 2000Mhz | Corsair Carbide Series 400C White (RGB FTW!)

Be kind to one another 🙂

Thanks!  I just did some poking around at lunch, and I came up with this - EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2, 80+ GOLD 750W, Fully Modular, EVGA ECO Mode, 10 Year Warranty, Includes FREE ... , which looks like it will work pretty well for some time to come.  I guess part of the issue is the case size of the XPS 8700, which the G2 works with and offers good features (amongst the EVGA line).  Thanks everyone for your help, can't wait to start putting things together.  My system is gunked up so I'm going to wipe it and reinstall everything beforehand as well.

I got the EVGA GTX1080SC to fit in my Dell T5400 (Workstation Case). Although it's just a Xeon Quad Duo it plays all games very well except LONE ECHO. My last card was EVGA GTX970SC but this 1080 runs on lower power with just 1 cable and came with correct cable too. My psu is 500W which I if I hadn't the extra cards in my system I could run it on lower...XiFi SoundBlaster & a Music DAW on PCIe. I also run a rare USB3 on standard PCI. No power issues. No USB issues with lots attached. Just measure before you buy in future and calculate your power needed.
