Okay.. so now im getting a little annoyed :P (Vive/Oculus)

Alright, I love Oculus, been keeping up with them since the beginning and I have a preorder for May. I had been loosely following the Vive for a while but i kind of wrote it off because I didnt think they could compete with the Rift. HTC and Valve have just been killing it with coverage and open business practices. Every VR video I see has a Vive in it and I get really excited watching all the Node videos but I question if the Rift will be able to do all these things that the Vive is doing? Where are all the CV1 videos with devs talking about it and showing off Touch demos? Seems like everything is behind closed doors and that really sucks when HTC is show boating their HMD and motion controllers with style. And its really starting to look appealing... I now have both HMD's preordered, but am holding out on canceling one.

So which is better? I know the specs are practically the same, but which tracking system is better? Will I have a good seated experience with the Vive or will I have to move the light houses to better accommodate a seated experience?
I have plenty of room for room scale, roughly 280 sq ft. I want to play cloudlands mini golf when im having friends over for a party, then switch to my HOTAS setup and play some ED. Its just frustrating because I want to light a fire under Oculus' ass so they'll start showing some demos. This is crucial, im sure they are losing customers because they have been so quite. If Palmer would just make a 2 minute video of the CV1 being able to work in roomscale im sure that would see so many more units.

"Standing", "walking", "wildly throwing your arms around" experiences get you much more tired than people think and looking at how the Wii has really died off does worry me somewhat.

Yes, it does take more effort, but in the end, it's again, MORE realistic, which everyone who loves VR wants - As real/immersive as possible.

However, I think the biggest reason the Wii died off was because it was very limited. The motion controls were great when they were first introduced, but quickly it became repetitive, and lost it's charm.

While the the Vive/Rift do have motion controls, and one could think it could easily follow the Wii's trend, I believe we finally have "real" motion controls, that we all wanted from the Wii (remember how exciting Red Steel's game looked in their trailer in the sword fighting scene using motion controls? But then was not anywhere close). Now we can take motion controls to the next level and use them in 3D space - motion controls can actually do what Red Steel was meant to be. This opens up a plethora of games/experiences to be made. Now we are not limited to the simple motion controls the Wii had on a 2D screen, but rather very precise controls mixed into the VR world.

I'm at a loss as to why Oculus is now being criticized for its room-scale capabilities when they've said all along that it's not their focus?

The tribalism that is setting in (r/oculus basically became a cesspool overnight and this forum seems to be heading down a similar path) is seemingly a result of people having actually made a purchasing decision... not unlike GPU owners endlessly seeking to justify their own purchase by talking down the alternative.

And such committed opinions from people who have possession of neither device? It's quite remarkable.

This made me wonder some time ago as well. I guess, each side has their inner need to prove the opposite "camp" wrong and justify their decision why they spent their money.

Too bad. I kind of miss the old forum. Right now all is about Vive vs Rift and why every other person is wrong. I'm thinking about making a break from this place.

Yes, that is all true, 99% of the forum users here have not even tried them, and are basing everything purely on different features each headset has, and what other people have said and shown that have actually tried both. Plus like you said, I think some people need to keep convincing their self why they made their choice, and share it with everyone. But it is very immature of users here if they are trying to convince why one is Superior to the other, that is just impossible at this moment.

But, overall I think it's very healthy to get people talking about the two, and listen to some user's decisions. Some people make some interesting arguments, while others are just plain subjective to their liking.

I think the real big problem here is the fact that Oculus hasn't been hyping Rift up enough, the users here have nothing to talk about other than the Vive that has been stealing all the attention; they are itching for some more Rift videos demonstrating it's potential from devs. I mean honestly, what about the Rift can we talk about that is new, or something game changing to come? All the developers are under NDA, so they are silenced, Oculus has nothing new to share, this forum is pretty dry of Oculus content to talk about.

Talking about the two is one thing, but atm on these forums, nearly every thread turns into a Vive versus Rift thread. The Oculus NDA's are blocking any real comparisons and it's all becoming really boring.

Hopefully in a few weeks with the Rift release and lifting of NDA's this will change with actual valid opinions being posted.

I've bought the DK1 shortly after it was released. Not from Oculus, but from someone who said VR was a dead end, and the thing was horror. When I got home and tried my first demo, I was blown away. VR was amazing! I started giving demo's and follow Oculus on the foot. Palmer and his team did an amazing job and I really felt with them. It was a nice small club, who listened to the community.

I was shocked when Facebook came in and took over. On the other hand I was happy to see that development was taking big steps. I bought the DK2 as well and the company was growing rapidly. It was an amazing journey and I really believed in Oculus. But slowly the doors where closed to the community.

I talked to Palmer about the HTC Vive and he was blown away himself. It was a great chat and I was optimistic about Oculus again because there was a friendly completion between the two companies, it felt really good. The real turn came shortly before the preorders for the CV1. I feel Oculus turned their backs to everyone. Support isn’t answering, marketing just ignores every question, there are no real announcements anymore. It is impossible to get in touch with them.

HTC takes a complete opposite direction. I’ve been invited by HTC several times for a private session. I’ve tried the Vive numerous times and played many demo’s. The device is amazing! Not only the device is great, HTC has a helpdesk which can help you live! HTC has great marketing and press and customer support.

Okay, I’m a bit hurt now that they F&#^ up a few preorder (including mine), and it is still uncertain if they can fix it. But they don’t need the community manager to support you! I never had any answer from Oculus press or marketing. I feel HTC is really helping…

My biggest problem is that my heart lies with Palmer, John, Andres and the Oculus Rift, but my mind is telling me I had a far more better experiences with HTC and the Vive for several reasons: support, press contacts, VR experience, what comes with the package… I cried literally when Frontier announced Elite Dangerous wouldn’t support the Rift until June! I play the game every day with my DK2. I see a lot of developers stepping over to the other platform. It is painful to see, but I understand them.

To be clear: I've tried the DK1, DK2, Crescent Bay, latest engineering’s sample, HTC Vive, OSVR, PlayStation VR, Gear VR, Zeiss VROne and many Google Cardboard clones. My experiences are not based on a few posts on the internet. I’ve tried them all.

If Oculus can fix their press and customer service, I think they will come a long way. But my stomach hurts to see HTC is taking the leap.

I think a lot of us are DK2 owners so already have an investment in Oculus. It seems a little pointless investing in the CV1 as its pretty much offers the same experience as DK2.

Are you kidding? CV1 has the entire audio system built in, that may be the best part of upgrading. The new displays are just the icing on the cake.
