On the eve of the virtual reality revolution

So here we are. For my part I feel like this is the eve of the virtual reality revolution. Hard to imagine just over 3 years ago all that was available was a single duct-taped together HMD that John Carmack demoed for a few. Now VR is everywhere and it's about to take off. The biggest tech companies in the world are in on it, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Sony, Samsung, HTC, etc. etc.

Virtual reality dominates E3 (from a single duct-taped HMD to this):

It's sometimes hard to put things in context, we get quickly accustomed to something new and don't always appreciate how far we've come. Only when you stand up and take a perspective look you realize where we are, on the precipice, the eve of the VR revolution.

But just like the PC, the internet and other things like mobile phones, it takes time and many iterations for the technology to become good, proper. The first generation consumer HMD's will be like that, the first iteration and lessons learned. It might take 3-4 iterations, or 10 years, until it will become so good that we can't think of interacting or using computers differently.

So, here we are, on the eve before the new day. It's surely going to be interesting.

yeah I found last week while watching a movie in vr, I just caught myself relaxing for a change and thought to myself vr really is cool. This really is an amazing piece of kit. I guess I do already take it for granted, but when you stop working and can just enjoy it, it really is something special. I can only imagine what the future iterations will be like and what experiences we will all get to enjoy.

EarlGrey, I am so glad your avatar is Captain Picard. Enjoyed reading your synopsis of where we stand today; and once again find myself agreeing with you. In many ways, VR is as much a part of "the final frontier" as Space. VR is a door into our own imagination.

Which can be a very bad thing.

Anyways.. yep, it is pretty amazing actually, as to how far we have come not just in the Oculus community, but how prevalent is has become in every day life. I was channel surfing in the car and came up on Fox news (yea, I know).. and they were talking about how this year they will have cameras on some golf tournament they are airing that will give "viewers a look of what the player sees on the course using virtual reality".

Here, Here. Raises glass to Oculus. I also want to say thanks to the amazing Devs out there who have made
these last few years an incredible journey for us. Cheers.

Agree to all of the above. After experiencing the DK2, having doubts about SDE, seeing all the negatives posts and worries on here, really nice to have a positive post just putting things into perspective.

Until the first real user reviews started coming out of E3, I was really on the fence on whether I was going to jump into this thing with both feet.

I'm sold now, I'm planning the PC upgrades needed to give me the Best Experience I can afford with CV1. I'm an end user, and Oculus now have me on board.

Very Happy for VR as a whole, and looking forward to the new batch of, When will my CV1 be shipping please threads, come Q1 next year 😛

But for many of us it's been the eve of the VR revolution for the last 30 years 🙂

for me it was from the moment I watched Tron and was given one of these as a kid...

Yes. Something we can all agree on!

And if neither system (of the big 2 - Vive and Rift) end up perfect.. well I guess I'll just by both and count myself lucky we got "proper VR" within my lifetime afterall.

Yeah, VR has come a long way!

(I'm still not sold on the mass market thing, but I don't want to ruin the positive spirit in this thread 😉 ).

So cheers Oculus/Valve/Sony and devs and VR peoples!
