Palmer talks advantages of the Rift’s custom lenses

"You’ll notice that unlike DK1 or DK2 that it was very sharp in the center, has a dramatic drop-off in quality, and is very blurry around the edges. In the final Rift lenses, it’s sharp in the center, and then remains pretty shapes all the way to the outside. That’s actually not just blur, it’s the consistency of the focus. Which means, when your eye is moving across this visual field, it’s not having to refocus and re-accommodate as it moves across the field of view. And that’s really important, not just for visual clarity but also for the comfort of your eye. We’ve also been able to reduce other distortions across the board. We’ve been able to minimize pupil swim."

Then I assume CV1 uses aspheric lenses. Maybe Freeform, although I would be quite surprised because of such lenses' manufacturing cost.

I agree with him on the fact that peripheral geometric distortions are software-solvable, whereas many other aberrations are not.
Actually, there will always be some visual defects somehow unless extremely expensive lenses (with several lenses for one eye) are used. The problem is just to find a balance between price and quality, I guess.

I also am curious, to say the least, about the "cutting edge lenses" he is talking about. The market of ophtalmic lenses, digital cameras and so on, is full of them. I mean, if the CV1 lenses are so fantastic "they couldn't have been manufactured before", it would be kind of an actual revolution. And as I said, complex lenses are usually far from being cheap.

We can also note that, each time new lenses will provide a less distorted picture, the pre-deformation shader will have to be reworked. I hope the SDK will eventually provide (or already does) a good flexibility on that matter. Same for chromatic aberration.

An interviewer noticed what appeared like multifaceted surface on the lens back at the E3 press events. That is when Palmer responded that it was a custom design Fresnel Lens.

It already does. All distortion now happens inside of the sdk, it's not exposed to the programmer. You just render the eye textures like normal and hand it over to the sdk (where distortion, chromatic aberration correction, etc happen behind the scenes).

Interesting. I'm usually not very fond of Fresnel lenses so I am even more curious !
However, I am not exactly convinced such lenses, even in a custom shape, could not be manufactured until now. Fresnel lenses are very easy (if not the easiest) and cheap to manufacture (because they are moulded, not surfaced first then polished*). Even if just one side has a Fresnel geometry and the other does not, it won't be that difficult nor expensive to make.
However, it would then be true that such lenses never were used before ; therefore, not manufactured.
And thinking about it, it indeed looks like a quite clever geometry for a VR device !

Thanks for pointing that out (I'm no developper, just un french optician slash VR enthusiast).

I'm sure they could be manufactured before now, however, there wasn't a real demand for them. No demand, no supply.

Has anyone been able to obtain replacement lenses for their Dk2? I think Cyberreality said they were planning on offering it. One of my lenses has microscratches on it; they were caused by using the included microfiber cloth that came with the Dk2.
A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on forums?

The fault is not the microfiber cloth. The problem is dust. Dust grains scratch the glass.

And unfortunately there is no way to avoid it!

It was cause by both for some ~ but it wasn't the problem at the time ~ it was the lenses themselves mostly. They were not "sealed/harden" as well as they should've been. The problem was corrected and no one or very few people report the problem anymore. The ones that do now ~ typically blame the cloth ~ but it seems like the cloth gets dirty from the dust or something else that is either dry up or hard on the cloth.

Either way, ask support for an update on getting them replace danknugz. It's already 3 months away before CV1 will release though, so I would just hold out till then instead of buying extra stuff for hardware that will be dropping support in the next 5 months give or take.

Back on topic~ I hope they keep up the good work. Len/optic is a hard field and it wasn't until recent did I hear any news coming advancements from it. Looks like to be a field that can change faster once more people demand more from it. VR will be another market for optics and I hope that increases the over all speed in development.

@danknugz: Feel free to reach out to Oculus Support.

We do have some lenses left, though it's not a guarantee we replace as the supply is limited.
