Post FB Buyout, it all feels a bit meh

Noone seems to be maintaining this board, it's filled with bots leaving crap.

Sony are showing off way more impressive stuff on their VR offering than anything currently on the Rift.

No hardware news at E3

It's all starting to feel like the beginning of a slump to me.

Maybe you feel like that because you strongly disagree , but as i read it, it is his opinion of the situation as it is now.
You should try to read it as it is meant and don't attack it because you don't like it.

That's not true at all. I'm on the forum, all day long as my full-time job. I've also been checking the forum even on my own time to deal with spam and to answer private messages.

There are not many companies that you can private message them and get a personal response within a few hours. We also have software engineers jumping in the forum and helping people with their projects.

Just because there are spammers slipping through the cracks here and there does not mean Oculus doesn't care about the community.

Yes, props to you! The oculus forums are well maintained, entertaining, and useful!

Ok, a few things given that it seems people want to see what they want to see rather than just what I wrote.

1) Evidently anything I say is my own opinion. Obviously I'm not speaking for anyone else. I don't think you've fully grasped the whole "giving your opinion" thing if you think I'm suggesting my opinions are fact. I've NO idea how you can blame me for suggesting its how everyone should feel. I didn't say that, I've said it's how _I_ feel. I've not said it's fact either. What's so hard to grasp about that ? Are you so desperate to look positive to Oculus that you have to jump on anyone who has a negative opinion at present ? I've not suggested anything I've said is fact.
IMO there is a slump, I would have hoped to have seen a killer bit of demo software from Oculus themselves by now, just my hope, it hasn't happened and to me that's disappointing given some of the staff they've taken on. I'm entitled to that opinion. Equally from 3rd parties, I still only show off the rollercoaster tbh. Nothing else is as equally impressive and accessible to non game playing sorts.

2) I think the street luge game on the Sony headset looks far more complete and entertaining I've yet seen on my Rift. It's as accessible as the rollercoaster, looks fun and more involving. That said, I've yet to play Eve, maybe that will do it for me. Again, just my opinion. To the poster above who suggested I needed to build a rift - no, I own one. No idea where that came from.

3) At the time of writing, the forum was full of posts by bots and very little by Oculus themselves. If theres a fulltime moderator then why aren't they clearing the crap away, and why the lack of input from Oculus. It was nothing to do with me asking questions that weren't being answered, so I've no idea why Cyber chimed in with that other than to try and make himself look a bit better. I said it was more the fact that the forum seemed unattended, with pages after pages of spam and little from Oculus. If these guys are VR lovers like the rest of us, it takes a minute out of their day to put a post up here and show it. The spam thing looks to have been addressed NOW but not at the point I wrote the post.

Because he moderates the forums, and every one of his posts is relevant in some way. Thanks for your qq though...it really contributed to the forums in terms of the vr discussion. I feel more evolved having read it and am sure that in my next lifetime i will apply what i have learned in this thread to become a better human being.

1) Oculus has been focusing on hardware for a long time and I prefer them doing so than spending resources on software. They seem to have started working on software in the past few months but it doesn't seem to me that they have a big team on this yet. They seem to be focusing more on helping game developers adapt or develop their games for VR than developing applications themselves. Looking at all the studios interested in VR and getting their hands on the Rift I'm not too worried about the number of apps available on launch.

2) I only heard about the luge game and it didn't seem too exciting. Is it really more entertaining than all the demos you've tried on the Rift? You compared it to the Riftcoaster but that's far from being the most engaging demo available. It's good as a quick pick for a demo to somebody but that's about it.

3) I think you didn't word this point properly. I'd love to hear your definition of "fulltime moderator". Oculus already has an employe working fulltime as moderator (if not full time, it's close to) and he's done a good job every morning (US time) cleaning the forum during the spam fest. As said by others, Cyber also spends time replying to members.
Now I'm with you on the fact that Oculus should provide 24/7 presence on the forums. 1 or 2 additional moderators in different time zones would help and wouldn't cost much especially since the FB buyout.

I'll echo that Oculus gives these threads a tone of attention. Usually you would expect them to be dealing mostly in the technical section helping developers but on top of that you have Cyber weighing on almost every hypothetical discussion.

The spam is annoying but they are clearing it up quickly.

Overall the only changes we have seen with the Facebook buyout are a lot more new hires and the recent deal with Samsung all of which have been made better through the relationship. Also maybe a bit more tit lipped around CV1 but that seemed to be the case before the buyout as well.

It is a great sign that the Oculus Rift is a force to be reckoned with, when so many obvious Sony Fan Boys feel the need to troll through this forum and drop little flames wherever they can.

Please ignore such nonsense...

I say anyone that loves Sony's products so much, should hang out in the Sony areas, rather than bothering the true VR supporters using Oculus Rifts.

The Sony luge is a decent idea. There is something similar on the Oculus, AhhhaAhhhha that falling game while looking down in the Rift.

I've managed to get non gamers to play through demos like Asunder which was a very nicely polished demo. Its a tad confusing to get through the plane sequence alive but the atmosphere is very well done. I think the Rift took some good steps at E3 in that their demos used future game releases and not the gimmicky demos both Sony and the Rift have shown in the past.

The risk to showing real games over demos of course is that it reveals some of VR flaws, overall though I believe Oculus remain number one in content simply because they are on the most open system and are supporting the mod community. Therefor baring Sony exclusives they are going to get all VR content first. There are a lot of unique work in progress experiences that are really good for DK1. A system like Morpheus may never get any of these because lets be frank, mainstream consoles suck for innovation and are too locked down to do anything risky or interesting. There are exceptions of course.

Thats not to say that there isn't a place for locked down VR experience on consoles with Morpheus. Different strokes for different folks. Until VRs strengths and weaknesses are better defined the most interesting experiences will likely be on the PC where all the innovative game development is happening.

Dear oh dear Will. Is that really the sum of your intelligence ? "I dont agree, so I'll call him a troll"

I don't own a playstation, and I DO own a Rift. I'm far from a Sony fanboy.
However, I think they've been far smarter with the introduction of their kit.
They've put out some decent hardware, with some immediately impressive demos which ANYONE can pick up and play.

Of course I think for the techies amongst us there are some great demos out there, but in terms of stuff you can use to show off the unit to your average joe - ie your parents come round and you want to show them the future but they're not going to be able to get their head around complex controls - I think Oculus haven't bothered.
I'm sure I'm not the only one to think that. It's overdue. That's just my opinion. But with the likes of Carmack on board, I'm disappointed something hasn't come from them.

I'm not disputing the mods on this board read the threads. At the point I posted this though, you had to scroll through pages of spam from bots to find a thread. It takes 10 seconds to delete a thread, it didnt look to me like the mods on here were bothering. I've already said they are now though - great.
I stand by the fact there is a severe lack of informational/entertaining updates from Oculus on here though.
With all the extra cash and staff they have post fb buyout, I expected more.
