Question for Oculus - Are you looking at dev projects without the dev's knowing?

As a long time dev (now 3 years on the same project DK1, DK2 and currently awaiting CV1) and one who has not yet posted a single image of what I'm making, I have one question:

Is Oculus allowed or already in any way looking at Dev projects through their data collection before the Dev's have even made it public?

I don't intend to make such a paranoid post but I think it's a reasonable question. The answer likely won't change my feelings one way or another, but it's a question I think Dev's should know.

Nah, this is not how stuff works. As a developer I'm sure you can imagine what type of data would have to be transmitted for them to actually see your game.

I'd perhaps ask why you develop for 3 years without ever showing anything, That sounds... unhealthy? 😄

Why would they ?

Toad - Never know. It came to my mind and I figured why not ask since it is feasible.

3 years to lock down measurements of a once real location that no longer exists. I had to be sure I locked the measurements down to 1/8-1/16 of an inch. I'm hoping to show stuff soon. I never intended to spend 3 years on it (I thought I had it at 6 months. That patterned repeated for 3 years until finally, everything is working)

Christopher - Honestly, I don't know. Maybe I have an overactive imagination. But we're essentially strapping cameras to our faces and pointing them at our projects. Now home always runs so I gotta ask.

We know exactly what data is being sent, there's only one piece of data that could be related to your project: the name of apps that are run are sent, so worst-case they know the name. However, I think that one might be Oculus Home sending that, so you wouldn't have to worry about it unless you ran your app from there.

Dreamwriter - What you're saying is kind of why I'm asking. From what I can tell so far. When I launch UE4 4.11, it instantly triggers "Oculus Home" to run. I've tried closing Home and using the "VR Preview" button in Unreal and it doesn't load up on the DK2. However, if I close Home. Re-launch UE4 4.11 and allow it to open Oculus Home, then my DK2 shows my VR preview of my level.

As a developer, I personally would have preferred to be able to run the headset without Oculus Home. Don't get me wrong though, 1.3 runs so much smoother than any of the previous SDK's. I just don't game enough to want to look at a games library or a VR environment unrelated to my personal projects.

Where can we learn exactly what data is sent?

I'd be interested as well.

They may not be getting anything pertinent today, but the way the terms are worded it doesn't mean they won't tomorrow and without telling you they are doing it. Also, look at this, it wasn't Oculus that told us what data was being sent today. It was a user who was looking at their internet traffic. Oculus hasn't said anything before someone forced them to say and even then it was just a pr statement saying that currently they aren't doing anything with the data and Facebook, but that in the future they may. Again, if you agree to the terms which you have to do to use rift then you are saying that you are fine with whatever they want to do in the future.

I'd be interested in getting a response from Cybereality.
