Palmer Luckey said the dev kits were sold for a loss, and were all off-the-shelf parts, while every single part making the Rift is custom, even including custom fabric. And he said it would have cost $1000+ without the Facebook deal, if they had had to make it as a company that needed to earn enough profits to survive. So based on that, yes it is cheaper due to the Facebook deal.
To reiterate, we are not making money on Rift hardware. High end VR is expensive, but Rift is obscenely cheap for what it is.
Quality isn't cheap, i guess DK2 is the best you can get for ~400$ for now.

that was before he had the idea that every Rift has to come with an expensive case barely anyone will use, an expensive controller millions of gamers already have, and "high quality" headphones
Theres EASILY over $100 worth of crap we dont need but have to pay for.
