Saw it late last night and gave it a read. Most of it seems to jive with other, less cloak and dagger sources.

I found this bit surprising:
6. How are the added headphones on the rift?
A: IMO the most important difference between the three. The headphones provide an even target across all users for devs and add so much comfort... Everything is tuned specifically for these headphones. The position of the in-game listener lines up with the position of the driver in front of your ear to ensure that you get the most acurate 3D audio possible.
The best thing of an integrated audio solution is that what I create will sound to you exactly like it sounded to me while I made it. If you play our game you hear everything like we wanted it to sound just like you see the world we created exactly like we wanted it to look because we use the same screen you use.

Palmer Luckey was somewhat ignored when he tried to explain how great the DAC + Integrated headphones sounded.
Maybe hearing is believing?

DrashVR, ie the guy who made Titans of Space, gave him a blast of shit for doing the AMA while under NDA.
"I think you are very much in the wrong for doing this."
As starved as we are for information, I think I agree.

This is something I hadn't thought about before was creating a baseline for the audio so you hear it the way it was intended to by the developers. Assuming they invest the proper time in audio design, games could end up sounding better overall.

As far as violating the NDA....I see both sides of the coin and have a hard time siding with one or the other. On the one hand, we aren't getting a whole lot in the way of information about the Rift like we are getting on the Vive. Part of that is the Rift is under NDA and Oculus isn't sending out demo units to the press like HTC is. I get the reasoning for it but I also think that HTC is currently doing a better job with marketing. On the other hand, a legally binding document shouldn't be thought so lightly of. Getting hold of an IP address gives a geographical location of the poster, possibly down to a pretty small area that, in conjunction with what information he has given about his workplace, could expose the company he's working for and/or himself.

It's maybe wrong, but nonetheless I enjoyed reading it : ]
Nothing really new, but it's always better than reading the sempiternal Vive vs Rift pitch flooding VR forums nowadays 😛

Thanks for the share !

Massive thanks & accolades to that guy for sharing what was pretty basic information. Oculus should have told us all of that and more quite some time ago. Marketing & Communications fail on the part of Oculus.

Great read. Apart from all the useful information given... the ceiling mounted cable bit has given me the idea of a ceiling mounted PC for my future games room.

As far as the NDA business is concerned.. I have no problems with NDAs being in place prior to products being sold.. what I strongly disagree with is NDAs on products that you have to pre-order if you want them within 2 or 3 months of launch.
The implication is you're really buying them at the pre-order stage, without the information needed to fulfil your consumer rights (you need to know if a product matches the manufacturers description in order to know if you've been mis-sold). Yes you can cancel your order but the time between NDA lifting and you getting the info you need means I don't think you have a reasonable time to make that decision. Basically NDAs and pre-orders shouldn't be combined.

I agree. That guy is our hero.

Breaking NDAs very much goes against the grain for me, but in this case I'm really struggling to feel that way. I'm sure plenty on here craving answers to such basic questions feel the same way.

Lots of interesting and reassuring stuff in that AMA, a very good read.

I'm pretty encouraged by reading this 🙂 I owe this guy a big thank you.

Assuming that it's legit (and the guy seems to have provided proof to the Reddit mods that it is, so that's good enough for me), it answers most of my concerns.

Why Oculus couldn't have said all this a while back and negated the need for all the doubts/queries/questions etc, I really don't know.

This NDA thing up to launch date is just stupid, IMO

The NDA for developers does not stop on March 28th.

That's what I thought. I wonder if they get continued benefits as a result (early access to new builds etc)?

He confirmed what we have heard from other sources, which is a good thing.

The Rift seems to have noticeably less SDE than the vive, but the fov is a bit smaller. The rift and the PSVR are more comfortable than the vive. Room tracking DOES work with the rift, but the lighthouses have a bit more range.

What surprised me and made me really happy is that the 1.0 sdk seems to offer a very stable experience and seems to include Asynchronous timewarp since 0.9. It also seems to include backwards compatibility from 0.6 sdk´s onwards.

All in all it´s great news. The rift has the advantadge in display quality (most important for me) and ergonomics. The vive has a slight advantadge in tracking range. As the rift already covers 5 meters (according to the guy), this shouldn´t effect most users though.

Still very happy that I went with the rift!
