As spotted by GameFront, public relations reps for Oculus VR replied only with “no comment,” so all we have to go on is the filing itself. Still, there are a few things we know. Yesterday, a community manager posted to r/Oculus that because so many units have sold, sales will eventually be stopped as the manufacturer runs out of components for previous models. The manager wouldn’t give an exact number, but did say that “over 50,000” Oculus headsets have been shipped.
“We never expected to sell so many development kits and VR only made this much progress with the community's support and enthusiasm,” community manager cyberreality said. “Even though we never wanted to sell out, it's a good problem to have.”

50,000 units.... I ask the question: Does that mean the DK1 is the most successful VR device that has been produced and put on the market? I can easily imagine so.
Good first step. For every 1 device probably around 50 people have tried it. In my few days of owning a DK1 probably 20 people have tried it, at home and at work, my family, friends and coworkers.
So it's probably not very exaggerated to claim that 2-3 millions have tried the DK1.
There was a tech conference where I live, Reykjavik, recently, and there were 3 booths demonstrating the Rift, including CCP which was showing off Valkyrie with their HD headset. The queues were long, and they got a lot of interest. I dare say they were the main thing on the show floor.
Unless they don't consider it being a VR HMD, I can't imaging the Forte VFX-1 having sold less than 50k units worldwide, considering it was a consumer product, had decent compatibility with the games of the time, its price dropped considerably after a few months, it was on the market for a couple years and did have a second revision :shock:
