Rift DK sells more than 50,000 units

As spotted by GameFront, public relations reps for Oculus VR replied only with “no comment,” so all we have to go on is the filing itself. Still, there are a few things we know. Yesterday, a community manager posted to r/Oculus that because so many units have sold, sales will eventually be stopped as the manufacturer runs out of components for previous models. The manager wouldn’t give an exact number, but did say that “over 50,000” Oculus headsets have been shipped.

“We never expected to sell so many development kits and VR only made this much progress with the community's support and enthusiasm,” community manager cyberreality said. “Even though we never wanted to sell out, it's a good problem to have.”

The Virtual Boy was not a head-mounted display. It had a stand.

I still have mine. With the shade removed from the front (making the screens semi-transparent) it looks exceptionally cool. The production version of the Rift could do a lot worse than having a design similar to the i-Glasses........

Where did I say it was a list of HMD's? It was a list of consumer VR!!

Well there is still an argument that the Virtual Boy was not VR either (despite having 'virtual' in the name). There was no head-tracking. There were not any first-person 3D rendered environments. No innovate controllers (like datagloves or cyberpucks, etc.). It really was not VR at all.

VirtualBoy ="stereoscopic peephole", then?

50,000 units.... I ask the question: Does that mean the DK1 is the most successful VR device that has been produced and put on the market? I can easily imagine so.

@EarlGrey[Hot]... yeah I have a problem!

Great point - 50,000 units must be a record. Virtuality combined did nothing close, and NVIS (both nVision and NVID) have not even broke multiple thousands!!!

Candle on the Cake - well done Oculus VR!

On a side, the most successful (units sold) immersive virtual world device would be:

1. Haptic feedback (steering wheel = 1,100,000+)
2. Capsule simulator (tank trainer = 100,000+)
3. CAVE (projector rooms* = 70,000+)
4. Oculus Rift (HMD = 50,000+)
5. Sim-NightGlass (Eyeware = 15,000+)
5.....?

*=I include dome systems

Kevin let's do some more math. What book movie TV show etc exposed people to the concept of vr and in what numbers. Tron has to be the first for me that made an impact. Some can argue the allegory of the cave 2000 years ago was the first exposure to the concept.

Next point what tech were people first exposed to giving a vr experience and in what number? What I am trying to get at is it possible your disneyquest vr has exposed more humans to real vr hmd tech than all the other solutions combined? Anyone want to throw some numbers out?

Michael Jackson captain eo was first good stereo3d movie I was exposed too. Old Greek saying excellence remains long after cost is forgotten

Wicked3d eyescream system with tomb raider was first good s3d game for me.

And for extra credit what media first exposed to concept of not building up heroes and revolutions sewing the seeds of their own destruction? (Like maybe vr revolution ). Bible for book and dune for movie. Star trek tos for TV show.
mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4123 I am looking into that LEEP VR I lack practical 3d knowledge, I have found some good links, but I am not sure if they are the ones you were talking about. Would you mind direct linking me to them? :oops:
