Rough guess when CV2 will be out?

Just curious will the CV1 I pre-ordered be obsolete in a year?

Doubt it. I would say a rough estimate would be Q3 or Q4 2017 for a next model. After all, we are not dealing with an overpriced apple product here that launches a new item every 8 months or so.

They've said repeatedly that they'd like this to be similar to console releases, maybe shorter, so expect a couple years at least.

That's not to say they won't do an update sooner, but it's less likely.

If its before late 2018 they'll get abuse so i expect them to take their time and make it a worthwhile upgrade.

2016 will demonstrate VR is a wet firecracker, public not ready and computers not powerful enough, CV2 cancel and facebook close oculus...

exactly, they have also said they will keep the hardware required specs the same for a while, which means eventually the total cost of ownership will fall as those HW components drop in price and new technology is released.

Considering it will take over a year from September 2015 for Oculus to produce and deliver the initial adopters, and it will be a lot faster the second time, the CV2 might start shipping about a month after the last pre-order is delivered at the door.

When they will be able to do more with less. Meaning a better quality screen with requirements less then what they are today or equal.

The amount for R&D they are pumping into this will inevitably mean that a newer better version of the Rift is going to be on the Horizon sooner than we think.

And the kicker is that you'll really, really want it, because VR is not like the Mobile Phone market where each new phone only improves slightly.
In VR each generation for a while is going to bring some ground breaking Tech.

- Eyetracking (foveted rendering)
- wider field of view
- tracking for 3rd objects (not your hands or head)
- haptic feedback
- different display technologies.
only to name a few...

Whatever your wildest dream, +1

My question to Palmer during the AMA would have been:
Can you still get excited about CV1, now that you have been working on prototypes that surpass CV1?
