SDK 0.8 - !!!!!EPILEPSY/SEIZURE WARNING!!!!!

Chaoss
Expert Protege
Sorry about the attention grabbing title but I think it's needed. Please do not update to 0.8 if you are developer and suffer from even a mild form of epilepsy or seizures based on flashing patterns or light. This SDK suffers from both extremely low performance and a very nasty black flickering bars effect which can come and go without warning mid-experience. The flickering is not random and is very quick, intense and repetitive which will induce a seizure if you suffer from them. Stay in 0.7 or what ever version you were on previously unless you are comfortable with until this bug is ironed out.

Most here might not suffer from it and think it's silly or I'm being over-dramatic but it can be life threatening for those of us who do and many of us are ok with poor performance or buggy SDK's but when seizure inducing flashing can activivate mid-experience without warning, even if it's for a very select few then that deserves a warning of some kind.

I will update this thread with any known fixes as they become available, if you do suffer from seizures and do decide to try the SDK, AS SOON as you notice any black flickering close your eyes tight and remove the headset.

The CPU is a 12 core/24 thread Xeon @ 3.1Ghz/3.6Ghz boost, I know it's a little under the reccomended spec but I'm hoping the large cache and many cores will make up for the lack of raw Ghz

Is there not a way to not display an image if one of these failure states is detected, as developers we sign up for this but I could see a lot of potential lawsuits if bugs like this made it out to the consumer release.

Thanks Chaoss. Is it possible for you to also provide a server log as well?

Also, are you getting those flickering patterns when running any VR app (ex. the Demo Scene from Config Util)?

Yes it was any app (tried utility app, a ue4 demo and a Unity demo).... although since I've ran the debug to get you the log, both the low performance and flickering has disappeared and it appears to work, even after a restart. I'm not sure what caused it or could have caused it.

Also, don't try PPSSPP VR or Dolphin VR if you have epilepsy. There are a lot of bugs that lead to flashing in some games, and of course the games weren't designed with VR in mind.

Can you describe the black flickering bars? Are they horizontal or vertical? Is it in the middle of the vision? I don't know if it is the same issue I reported.

The black bars were vertical, and would appear all over from left to right to central. it looked like a malfunctioning crt but instead of horizontal lines it was vertical, the fps was also around 20 - 25.

The first time you ran into this issue after updating your drivers and installing the 0.8 runtime, did you happen to restart your PC? Wondering if a reboot fixed the issue you were seeing.

I had no issues with it.

I had a similar problem on 0.7. In my case lines were not vertical but horizontal.
In my opinion this bug is caused by some HDMI connectivity issue. I am guessing that my lines were horizontal cause I had already flipped the screen 90 deg' in the system settings.
