Selling my CV1 --- moving to HTC VIVE

Cv1 feels about 10% better than DK2.  The hype train on CV1 is ridiculous...

After the crap Palmer Lucky & crew have pulled the past months...  closing Oculus to Rift only users is terrible marketing plan & above all ...  the system is still relying on optical tracking.   I've had the Rift a few hours and feel I'll be selling it on FleaBay and order myself the HTC Vive.    Valve and HTC are open to all dev. platforms  & are simply embracing VR  not trying to corner of a section of the market.  I've tried all systems from DK1,Dk2 CV1 & now the Vive & it's clear that the Vive shines above the CV1 with or without the controllers...  Vive can easily be used in a seated manner as well.     Why restrict myself.

I'm not sure if OP is trolling or not. "You can see pixels". LOL. Like Welby said some people seem generally disappointed with currect gen HMDs and want believe that Vive will magically have better resolution or something.

Vive has same resolution as the rift, if anything pixels are more visible due to higher FOV and SDE. Yes it offers motion trackers and roomscale, but in terms of graphics it's almost the same. They even both use fresnel lenses.

I guess there was just too much hype surrounding VR. Me, I'm a die-hard enthusiast, there's almost nothing that would prevent me from using VR. Even if God Rays were 10x worse, there was black smearning, motion blur etc I would still use it. But I guess I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Oculus would have done a hell of a lot better if they'd held out & released once their controllers were ready for the shelves.

I doubt that.

Allowing competitor a few months head start is not a good idea. Oculus is bascially SOLD OUT, or at least more than expected.. I dont think that is a fail.
Lack of Touch is annoying granted...but not releasing would have been much worse. Then they would lose tonnes of customers to Vive as people want VR now!.

Besides, a number of us a content for now with gamepad or flight/car sims. The controllers will come in time, and if they turn out better than HarryPotter sticks then all the better.

Oh also just saying but the black smearing is highly reduced in the CV1

Good to know, Welby. Good honest comparative review too.  Is there black smearing on Vive? No reviews discuss it on either HMD.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

I have a rift ordered but got to demo the vive last summer and was amazed by how great vive is, I'm hoping rift will be similar...... I have just read this morning that vive orders and billing transaction are being booted out of ordering  and orders cancelled from computer glitch in the system. people who ordered early on have completely lost their orders with no way to be put back in line.... it does surprise me in this day and age that two companies selling a consumer product are having such a horrendous time...I don't quite get it.

The problem with payments being turned down is standard practice with banking fraud protection, it's out of the control of HTC. It would happen with any large purchase that falls out of line of what you usually buy. Even though it's not HTCs fault, I've heard they're allowing those who's orders were dropped by their banks to get back in the same spot if they get in touch, which is pretty decent of them imo.

With Oculus, I think it's just new tech and a few glitches launching a first product, it's not surprising and I'm more than sure they're manically running around doing everything they can and working crazy hours. I'm happy to cut them some slack.

The only thing wrong (so far) with the Vive's launch is that they're using Digital River for payment processing.  There's a lot of trash sold through digital river which is what's causing the fraud prevention triggers due to a long history of disputed transactions.
I have a bit of a history of hating Digital River, and I can't believe such a large company would even consider using them.
That said, I paid with PayPal so crisis averted.

🙂 Great Comparison and summary Welby. Thanks.

Welby, what about finger/hand tracking?

I've heard that the only system that can possibly do finger/hand tracking is the CV1's constellation system.  I've heard that the Vive's light house isn't accurate enough at all for that sort of thing and that is why the Leap Motion uses the same sort of tracking the CV1 uses.

Can you confirm that?

You can't easily do finger tracking with the Lighthouse, because you'd need to wear gloves packed with sensors, at least one for each joint. That's the tradeoff between the two systems.

That said, while my Leap Motion is quite good at tracking my fingers, it isn't perfect, and suffers from inevitable occlusion problems due to only having one camera. It may work better when I actually have a headset to stick it to, as I've currently only been able to test it by holding it in front of my face.
