So Higher Definition for Rift?

So JC has made some new code to make the Gear VR run in even higher definition. So what are the chances of this also coming to the Rift?

What/who is JC?

It is impossible to raise the Rift's physical resolution beyond 1080X1200.

However there are pixel density/super sampling settings, the Rift debug tool has been out basically forever, the tray tool has been out for months, many games have in game pixel density settings.  What else are you wanting?

The new GearVR feature is cylindrical layers.
This lets user interfaces have better quality by having constant pixels per degree on the display (the cylinder curves with the lens distortion.
But it requires developers to design user interfaces for it, it won't just make existing things better. It also doesn't help with general rendering, it's for 2D guis that can be wrapped into a cylinder.

Carmack:
Not
sure what the schedule is, but Rift will also be getting cylindrical
layers. Devs still have to design for it, and that can be a struggle --
lots of people really didn't like the idea of targeting a 2D surface
for their UI, because they were so enamored with the potential for
arbitrary 3D UI. It was absolutely the right thing for mobile, but PC
may want to trade differently.
