Some Questions...

Some of you probably know I'm getting my Rift tomorrow and whilst I do have my nose fairly rooted to the ground there's a few questions I would like to ask outside of simply doing a Google search. Perhaps it's more personal hearing from you guys.

1. What's the deal with the file location for home games/apps now, I have mine installed on the C Drive can they be moved to other drives now or placed on multiple drives?

2. Aside from the obvious free stuff on Home any recommendations for free content downloads to try out?

3. What's the best game to purchase from the store? (I already have Subnautica and Hitman GO alongside the free pre-order stuff).

4. Can you use an adaptor to plug in to DisplayPort instead of HDMI are there any issues doing so? I ask because the GTX 1080 only has one HDMI output.

5. Any dual HMD owners have both plugged in (not necessarily used) at the same time, any conflicts - do I have to unplug each time to use?

6. Is there an non third party app for playing 2D games on the giant screen?

I guess no one responding about the displayport means it's not likely to be possible.

Regarding number 6, you can just play your 2D games inside of Steam. Their theatre is free as part of the Steam VR app, and works just as good as playing a game in Virtual Desktop.

Hey Shadow, regarding Q5. You do not need them both plugged in at the same time.

The Rift works from the Vive breakout box. Just pull the power lead out of the breakout box, swap the device and plug the power lead back in. 30 seconds to swap.

I've been doing this for the past couple of weeks and had no problems. Currently my evenings consist of an hour or so in ED (Rift) and then an hour or so in Holopoint / Audio Shield (Vive).

You don't have to worry about the adapter you asked about in Q4. 🙂

Thanks for the responses but my set up is a little different.

@Zenbane ahh that's good to know, I thought this might have been Vive exclusive for some reason as I've not heard anyone talk about it here...silly me.

@LeeG_UK I saw your response about this in another thread, however, with my setup that option isn't practical. The Vive/breakout box etc is in the front room away from my PC/desk (hole drilled through wall for cables). The Rift will be set up at my desk so the breakout box won't be anywhere near unless I run the cable through the wall back into the room. If that's the case, how long is the Rift cable? The Vive is currently using the HDMI out on the GTX 1080 due to the fact Nvidia are working on a fix to get the Vive working via the Display Port.  If I could use the rift via the Display Port then that would solve a lot of headache.

In an ideal scenario once Nvidia update the 1080 drivers I'd have Rift in the HDMI and Vive in the Display Port.

Also, with people talking about bent pins on the HDMI cables isn't it risky to keep plugging them in and pulling them out Lee?

@shadowmask72 Ah, now I understand your layout. I don't expect the Rift cable to be long enough to come back from the other room. It's not as long as the Vive cable.

As for the concern about the HDMI connector. Bent or broken pins tend to be an issue from new. It's very difficult to bend or break a pin (unless you physically pushed something into the connector). There would be an increase in wear and tear, but these devices are designed for removal (I always hold the plug to remove it, never pulling on just the cable). I'm certain there will be owners who remove their devices at the end of every day so it is not left plugged in. If you are worried about wear on the Rift connector, you could try a short HDMI extension lead.

I have heard of some people using something like:

 https://www.amazon.co.uk/CSL-bidirectional-Full-HD-Frequency-capable/dp/B00W6XRCKA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF...

I've not tried it myself, but may look into something similar soon.

Thanks for the tip Lee. Although the distance to the back of the PC to the breakout box is probably only 1m. If the default cable is 3m I'd be ok doing as you suggest.Well I'll find out soon enough. Hurry up UPS. Jeeze. DPD is  a far superior courier company. You can live track the driver down to the minute.

1- Home and the games/apps must be on the same drive
2- Sightline the chair comes to mind
3- Elite Dangerous, Project Cars, Edge of nowhere, Pinball Fx and Airmech
4- Can't say
5- Don't have both
6- SteamVR theatre mode, but I prefer Virtual Desktop, less of a hassle... Bigscreen also works, but performance issues for me

1.  If you can afford the bandwidth (ie no monthly cap) I'd suggest a fresh install to move drives.  Easier and probably more reliable than trying to manually move and redirect.

3.  I spend most of my Rift time playing Elite or Project Cars.  Based on reviews I'd say Blaze Rush and Chronos are way up there.  I bought The Climb but it hasn't hooked me.  Still gorgeous, but I'm hoping Touch is the missing link for me.

6.  Most of the integrated programs like the Video player have odd limitations.  I use Whirligig rather than Oculus Video for that reason.  I'd say use Steam's BigScreen unless someone here has a better recommendation.

30Mbps connection here so not a problem downloading again. This is something I can do now whilst I'm playing Technomancer.  Let me get this straight, uninstall all of Oculus Home and games and then reinstall on a new drive. It no longer has to be the C: drive right?

Zoomie, yeh I have Project Cars (Steam version) and ED. The Solus Project. Hmm that's a little disappointing. Steam auto plays games in a Virtual cinema when the game isn't VR enabled using the Vive. I do have Virtual Desktop as well but I was hoping there was a solution where I wouldn't need to boot that up.

My C drive is getting full and I have 3 other drives so I would love to know if you can start again on a different drive and the best way to do it 🙂

Techy, I just uninstalled Oculus from the Programs and features in Windows this also unistalls all of your games too. Then just go to the Oculus product guide and start the process again. It asks you what drive you would like to install on.

Once installed, go to home, Library, Past Downloads and then just re-download all your games. Pretty easy.
