Some things I've noticed

Hi guys!

My DK2 arrived today (one day after they said that it was in for the next shipment :D)

However, there are a few issues that I've noticed, and was wondering if these are common, and in there are any fixes.

Firstly, the most obvious thing is a pretty severe colour "bleeding" effect for anything that's not directly in my field of vision. This just looks like a yellow/green smudge. The greater the colour difference, the more noticeable it is. Most obvious is black-on-white, and looks to be about 3cm bleed (not on screen, relatively speaking). This is more noticeable on B cup than A. This effect worsens the further away from the centre you are focusing.

Secondly, the tracking seems to be fairly choppy, even when the camera is in the line of sight.

Thirdly, and most obviously, there are black zig-zag dots going down the screen diagonally. This is more noticeable in lens A.

Fourthly, It's almost impossible to focus on anything other than a very small radius from the centre. I have very good peripheral vision usually, and this effect is really quite annoying because of that.
Lastly, I notice that apps are almost impossible to launch in VR properly. For some reason, the only apps that work are Virtual Desktop (when I have set the DK2 to "Landscape Flipped" in screen resolution), and the demo scene.

Has anybody else encountered any of these? If so, have you found a fix for them?

This is uncorrected chromatic aberration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration), make sure your IPD is set correctly and you have the dial positions set in the configuration utility properly.
Oculus are apparently working on this issue too.

Oculus are supposed to be working on this, there's loads of potential causes, make sure the extra USB power is plugged in (its listed as optional in the manual AFAIK - I dont have my DK2 yet), keep framerate at 75 or higher, make sure nothing is running in the background etc etc.

Is this in bright scenes/dark scenes or all of the time? Have heard about some green artifacts in black images but not black dots appearing.

This can be related to incorrect IPD, but in general this is an issue with the way the lenses are shaped, don't think much can be done about it.

Yeah, configuration's been a pain in the ass since DK1, but thats what you get with a dev kit! All we can do is wait for Direct to Rift mode to be fixed/made more compatible.

There needs to be a quick tips/FAQ thread, there's loads of threads like this popping up.

Thanks for that. The measurement utility for IPD is absolute garbage  Apparently my pupils are 6.8cm apart. Not even close! For anyone reading this, get somebody to measure it for you with a ruler:

It seemed to solve most of my problems. The black dots were only visible on Virtual Desktop (I don't recall seeing them when I got skyrim working).

I now have mega motion sickness due to some bad configuration on vireio, not supporting motion tracking. It feels like I have a tennis ball in my throat.... Bloody vireio!

Anyways, other than the 3 hours to get skyrim working, the depth on Skyrim was amazing!

Is there anywhere on the face of the DK2 where a webcam could be installed? Or... Are the specifications (3D printable mesh) available for the small 'door' at the top centre of the rift? That area could be used to fit expansions (I don't think it has IR tracking dots).

How are you finding Skyrim? I got it to sort of work, but it was like i'm only seeing the middle most area of the display. Any of the menu's that sit in the corners are unviewable. Did you have a similar problem?

I used the zenni link found here on the forum, this one isn't really feasible for me (arms lenght? How am I supposed to see anything without glasses, and how to correctly centre the zero with them on?). Self done isn't reliable, this one (with a rigid ruler) as the zenni one (same procedure, with their paper ruler, verified); I even tried with a vernier caliper, cause there is no such a thing as overkill, but can't get a solid reliable data. Somehow the result wasn't too far off the software measure. Still, I upped the value in the oculus software to something more like the ruler seems to say, I'll see if it goes better, chroma related at least.

Of course, one should have the IPD measured by a professional, when possible.

Its weird rhat most people are experiencing choppy tracking, mine worked perfect and smooth right out of the box

I've a feeling its more to do with people's Windows installs than SDK/hardware issues on Oculus' end. Loads of stuff runnin in the background would have all games juddering away but unless you hate microstutter you wont notice. Its impossible to ignore in VR though. I went out of my way to eliminate microstutter on my system, Windows barely runs any processes at all now lol.

Regarding the choppy tracking:
After plugging in the additional power source and configuring the eye-to-neck distance, the tracking is now perfect.

The IPD didn't fix the colour smudging, however it seems that configuring the straps so that your eye is central works to help increase the distance from the centre.

Not gunna lie, Virtual desktop is #1 app so far! The demo scene is so realistic though it really feels like you're there!

One odd thing I've noticed is sometimes I get (not sure quite how to explain this) an effect like pixel rain. It happens very fast and always in the same direction but only over a short distance on screen.
I thought it may be a problem caused by the latency correction but while sat on a menu screen with no movement it was still happening.
This may just be a conflict problem my end as weirdly this seems to happen in time with in game music. It also happens while wearing headphones so it's not camera vibration either. :?:
