Sony Reveals PSVR 2

Sony at CES2022 has revealed the PSVR 2. Spec wise this is sounding pretty good.

https://www.roadtovr.com/sony-playstation-vr-2-announcement-psvr-2-specs-field-of-view

They've moved from a single camera outside in tracking system to 4 camera inside out tracking, which should improve things like depth tracking (which I believe the PSVR wasn't great at).

Conventional specs include 2000 x 2040 res per eye (higher than the Quest 2's 1832x1920 but lower than the Reverb G2's 2160x2160) with HDR OLED panel(s) at 90Hz and 120Hz. Field of view is claimed to be 110 degrees, but the direction isn't specified (horizontal or diagonal?). Connection to the PS5 is via a single USB-C cable (and apparently no breakout box).

It's controllers will be called Sense controllers.

More interestingly, the PSVR 2 includes eye tracking and headset haptics.

Headset haptics has some cool potential. I used to have a pair of haptic headphones. They had vibration motors built in, they'd use the base frequencies to run the haptics, so explosions and gunshots (etc) would make them vibrate. Seems odd, but it worked pretty good, I liked them.

One downside, the PSVR 2 has no speakers/headphones. There's a 3.5mm audio jack and a mic, but otherwise sound comes from your TV.

No release date or price yet.

Although from my point of view, if it isn't open to development, I'm not interested in it. Anybody can develop for Oculus, WMR, OpenXR or SteamVR. Doing anything with a PS5 is a much harder situation.

I still wish companies would stop saying 2000 pixels across is 4K. Humans aren't fish, our eyes look forward, they overlap. So a PSVR 2 only has slightly more than 2000 pixels actually visible (slightly more due to less than 100% stereo overlap, which I'm guessing it has like most headsets).

I wonder if they will have some form of passthrough now that the cameras are on the headset? What is the camera positioning and coverage?

They already have an exclusive game announced: Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Not to be confused with the Oculus exclusive Horizon Worlds. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this.

It seems that a group of Next Gen headsets will be at least sharing the same fabrication:

Incredibly telling that these proposed systems will all be vying on a similar level.

Again a separation from the CasualVR from the SeriousVR applications.

It's always interesting when one company works for multiple competitors. Like when IBM was making PowerPC cpus for Nintendo (GameCube's Gekko and Wii's Broadway), Sony (PS3's Cell) and Microsoft(Xbox 360's Xenon) all at the same time, each with company specific customisations.

No matter how alluring it might be I just don't see myself ever going the console route. Too heavily invested in PC.
