Original post:
Close to breaking news - if true - I just love oled so much more than LCD (well at least if oled gets similar ultra-low SDE like modern lcd panels):
"One important holdout remains: Sony Group Corp. plans to use Samsung Display Co. OLED panels in its next-generation PlayStation VR goggles, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The Japanese console giant sold more than 5 million units of the original PS VR, launched in 2016, and is aiming to release the successor in the holiday period next year, the people said, asking not to be named discussing internal plans."
Depending on the panel, lcd could still have more subpixels and higher res (like Vive Pro 2) - there're tons of things we don't know yet. And Sony hasn't confirmed anything.
Red arrow marks the arrival (first impact) of PSVR2 oled 🙂

Vendetta Forever is out on PSVR2 - compared to the Quest 2/3 version, the PSVR2/PS5 version has dynamic shadows, improved post-processing:
"PS VR2 players can enjoy a few visual perks as well. Your view is mirrored on the TV at 4K, with a stabilized camera for optimal spectating and streaming your wildest moments. In-game you can enjoy real-time shadows, dialed-up lighting, and post-processing."
Source: https://blog.playstation.com/2024/10/22/vendetta-forever-ps-vr2-features-detailed/
This is the PSVR2 trailer:
Even with enhanced lighting and dynamic shadows, this looks too much like bottom-end phone VR to me - but the game is made with the 1.2 tflops Quest 2 (and Adreno 650 phone gpu) as the lowest common denominator. Might grab the game on sale though.
With only 56 ratings in 4 days, it seems not even PSVR2 users care for such ultra-low-end Quest ports.
Btw, I did buy some enhanced Quest 2 ports for the PSVR2/PS5 like Tales From the Galaxy's Edge and Jurassic World Aftermath - and I don't like any of them. Really bad games even if massively enhanced for the PSVR2/PS5 - the way too low-end graphics kill immersion - and also the lack of proper physics and very simplistic gameplay, feels like 20 years old PC games.

I've had the ceiling lamp in my VR room for more than 10 years - it survived the Rift CV1 and Index, but it did not survive my boss fight with the mutated Ramón Salazar in Resident Evil 4 Remake VR 😬
This is a few seconds before I hear a loud crash from the real-world: 😅
I'm aiming upwards - and do be careful doing that if you have a nearby ceiling lamp!
Maybe a video is better - to better explain the death of my beloved ceiling lamp:
Also this game requires oled, I had to add tons of extra brightness to the above image, so colors are all kinda wrong. Resident Evil 4 Remake VR is full AAA experience with an amazing Metascore of 93, same as Alyx.
Coming from Metro Awakening, it's really awesome to see what you can do having about 12-13 times the processor power of the Quest 2:
Again I had to increase brightness a lot for this shot - it looks awesome in the PSVR2 oled hmd. This is just to show the view distance, and many detailed buildings - you got none of that in Metro Awakening due to being designed for the extremely weak Quest 2 gpu.
Apart from the ceiling lamp, it was a joy getting back to Resident Evil 4 Remake VR - I do consider it one of the 5 best VR experiences ever made - together with Alyx, Lone Echo 2, Call of the Mountain and Asgard's Wrath 1.
This really is a 30 tflops game - needing an RTX 3080 or better for 120 fps. A dev told me he gained 50% more fps by using eye tracked foveated rendering, and Resident Evil 4 Remake VR does use that - lifting the hardware capabilities so these correspond to about 15 tflops (PS5 can do 10 tflops with no foveated rendering), and then devs reduced fps to 50% of 120 fps, namely 60 fps. It all works fine with Resident Evil 4 Remake VR, the game is so dark you do not notice reprojections - and Sony has provided many updates for the PSVR2, the PSVR2 runs great with my PS5 (non-Pro).
Eye-tracked foveated rendering in action - see how res is reduced in the periphery - you cannot see that when playing.

New trailer - and for the current Black Friday sale prices, the PS5 and PSVR2 combo has little competition if any - packing the power of close to 7 Quest 3s - or 15 tflops when using eye-tracked foveated rendering:

SubSide is coming to PSVR2 - this probably is my favorite VR experience from 2024 - not really a game, but VR really isn't about games, but about creating amazing virtual realities, and SubSide is second to none for doing exactly that:
As the PS5 and PSVR2 have just been on sale, getting high-end VR experiences never has been more affordable. And SubSide with oled and 4K res may not bow to even the fastest PCs - ok, might bow a little 😉

There's a new PSVR2 exclusive named Oniriam - normally I buy all exclusives, but I'm not really sure about this one - it also costs about $35, so not really cheap - and looks kinda strange 🤔
It's rated 79% in the PlayStation Store, and you cannot refund once downloaded - I'll wait for a $15 sale or so 🤗 😇 The lack of refund really has destroyed my motivation to buy anything from Sony.
Btw, Gran Turismo 7 just got some 32GB patch, but looks much the same to me. Still a great experience - and I finally got out of the 1970s granny cars and could do some proper driving today 😄 GT7 is like Dark Souls 3 or Elden Ring - you start with old granny cars with speeds below when I'm on a bike, and then you slooooowly "git gud".
Here are some ordinary screenshots (but showing the game for what it is - no fancy pants or highly selected screenshots) while wearing the PSVR2 - these were hard to take when driving 😅
It's probably the best driving sim in VR - but I'm not that critical, I still love F1 22 - where I get solid 80 fps with no reprojections using Index + RTX 3090. GT7 is 60 fps with reprojections - and I still notice the oled mura. PSVR2/PS5 still feels like a poor man's setup - compared to PCVR, but surely PSVR2/PS5 is heads and heels better than Quest standalone - using foveated rendering you do get the power of about 7 Quest 3s running in parallel. A PS5/PSVR2 system can easily cost $800 - 1000 though.

Btw, I really do consider the PSVR2 a savior for high-end VR games and apps - here are some key numbers for recent "blockbusters", the numbers are fresh from today:
Behemoth:
PSVR2 = 1055 ratings, 92% average.
PCVR = 563 ratings, 70% positive
Quest = 889 ratings, 84% average
Metro Awakening:
PSVR2 = 1565 ratings, 91% average.
PCVR = 1788 ratings, 74% positive
Quest = 993 ratings, 90% average.
Alien: Rogue Incursion:
PSVR2 = 994 ratings, 90% average.
PCVR = 537 ratings, 65% positive.
Quest = not yet available
Arken Age:
PSVR2 = 181 ratings, 98% average.
PCVR = 66 ratings, 93% positive.
Apart from Metro Awakening, which was a great disappointment for many PCVR users due to being a really low-end Quest 2 port, PSVR2 has the most ratings - and often by far.
We saw a similar effect in the start on the Quest standalone platform. Few apps and tons of buyers gave great numbers of sales. I think we're seeing a similar trends for the PSVR2. With less than 300 apps and 2+ million PSVR2 users, devs have a great and hungry PSVR2 market - and they may make much more money selling for PSVR2 than selling for all the Quest standalone hmds.
As the PCVR and PSVR2 versions are extremely similar, devs can make a PCVR version and make it work on PSVR2 with little effort (confirmed by the Arken Age devs). As sales for Metro Awakening and Behemoth got 2-3 times more ratings for PCVR/PSVR2 than for all of the Quest standalones combined, this does indicate that devs may profit from focusing on high-end VR instead of the lowest-end VR (=Quest standalones).

Spent some hours driving this weekend, in Gran Turismo 7 🙂
I have 10 hours in the game, Sony says I've completed 16% of the game...
I don't mind the mura, somewhat blurry image due to limited super-sampling and the 60 fps with reprojections, I'm greatly enjoying the game. In fact, I think GT7 is the best VR driving sim available - what Sony did with this AAA game is truly impressive.
If I did not have a gaming PC, I'd probably be just fine with the PS5/PSVR2.
To me, the PSVR2 is awesome, also for letting more users experience high-end VR for a much more limited price than PCVR.
Not sure the PS5 Pro is worth it though as it is too slow lifting games from 60 to 120 fps.
I think the PSVR2 will shine like never before with the PS6 😀

Hmmm, the performance boost with Arken Age and the PS5 Pro compared to the original PS5 seems rather small to me:
"For PlayStation VR2 players with a PS5 Pro, Arken Age offers two choices. Performance Mode is the developer's recommended choice that lets you play at a native 90fps and 3040 × 2240 resolution. Quality Mode uses 60fps gameplay with reprojection and a higher resolution of 4000 × 4096 [...] VitruviusVR also confirmed Arken Age on PS5 Pro has a 15% resolution boost over the base PS5 console in Performance Mode, and a 25% resolution boost in Quality Mode." Source: www.uploadvr.com/arken-age-review/
On paper, the Pro is about 70% faster for the tflops - so only getting 15 to 25 % more res seems like a disappointment to me. It would explain why GT7 is still locked in 60 fps with reprojections with the Pro, not even smooth 90 fps is supported.
I'll wait for the PS6 😀

Yesterday Sony published another State of Play video - you can watch it here:
In the video, 3 PSVR2 games were included and can be seen below:
Note that Secret of the Mimic does not confirm VR support in the trailer - but Sony confirmed it elsewhere:
For now, only The Midnight Walk, launching May 8 2025, has been confirmed for other platforms.
