Star Trek

Imagine you're in Starfleet Academy. Training as a Starfleet Captain graduate and get your own ship to command with the crew of your choice, maybe some of your friends from the Academy (possibly friends in real life or NPCs if you prefer). You are given a mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. Doing so you encounter new civilizations and you must interact with them. These interactions would be things such as, helping them advance as a species by offering them new technology (replicator maybe? Or perhaps photon torpedos ) offering trade treaties with the federation (which you can make a commission off of) trade goods, help them out (complete a mission) things such as "there's a thief that we're having trouble tracking down could you help us?" or "We're losing power and don't know why" any countless types of missions. You have a large Star Trek pool to choose from. As you accomplish these missions make treaties explore, upgrade your ship, (possibly establish colonies and purchase unpopulated worlds to set up colonies on to research or make a profit) there will be consequences. You may attract the Borg or stumble upon species 8472. You may make as many enemies as allies, you may get Starfleet wiped out or save them from destruction. Your actions may change the political heads of Starfleet and maybe even its laws.

Does this excite you, imagine doing all this from the Captains Chair, walking to the elevator to the transport room and going on an away mission. Interacting with all this new life in person. The Oculus has made this possible.

I think I'd rather pilot a fighter than sit on the bridge and give orders. Does Star Trek have much of a precedent for ship-to-ship fighters?

If forced to be there, best to be a janitor who, every time there is a battle.. finds themselves sweeping the floor next to the ejection pods.
Intelligence... is not inherent - it is a point in understanding. Q: When does a fire become self sustaining?

You guys might find "Star Citizen" interesting, they said they'll have Okulus Rift support at launch:

OR https://robertsspaceindustries.com (currently down for maintenance)

@Species5618 If you're interested in working on a star trek project, one thing that you can do is start making some 3d models of ships, stations, planets, people. Then when someone is ready to start a project you already have a lot to contribute.

Centration looks really cool. It is essentially Station 13 in first person. I think they did say they won't be adding Oculus support until post release though.

I checked it out, but it failed to inspire. Maybe I missed something. All I saw was a guy walking around playing with a door, and the possibility of being gas and traps and such. It didn't really instill much fear.

Though it's not very involved (and looks like something that crawled out of 1997), someone has built an explorable interior of the original series Enterprise. Their program uses some version of Torque 3D, so maybe it would be possible to hack in Rift support.

It's not a very compelling package on its own, but maybe someone else can take what they've done so far and build upon it.

I'm kind of a huge Trek fan, so I'm way into this kind of thing. Artemis is fun as hell, if anyone gets a chance to get a group together with the requisite hardware.

Hello huge Trek fan, I am one of the two guys that built the project you are talking about above... Yes it was built by just two of us in our spare time, evenings and weekends, we both have day jobs lol.

Sorry that you did not find our package very compelling - we are aware that the actual artwork could be slicker, however our focus was always to just see if we could get the entire ship into the engine and walk around. We achieved this with great success in our latest version, which is free for all to download and play with. You can explore all 24 decks, take a shuttle out and fly it through various short exercises and combat simulations, and there are also other missions involving boarding parties of Klingons to hunt down.

And yes, this was built in Torque 3D, which now has Rift support. Unfortunately, we built this game using an earlier version of the engine which does not have the Rift support built-in, so we are in the process of porting the game up to the latest MIT release of Torque. Due to various resources we used (climbable objects, moving elevators/platforms, clickable buttons and panels, coloured lighting, etc) not being compatible with the latest release, this is a lengthy process... But soon, enough will be done that we will be able to walk the halls of the Enterprise using the Rift. When that is done we will of course offer it up for free just like we did our original game.

CBS refuses licenses to anyone with regards to digital entertainment in the Star Trek universe... They have exclusivity deals and they are legally prohibited from even negotiating with people like us. We tried several times and even got to talk to a VP over there, but no go. So am not surprised to hear they are not getting back to others who are also seeking licensing.

Anyhow, just thought I would chime in here, since I was just looking for forums on Rift and Torque 3D and saw this comment about our project. Always good to see feedback, positive or negative. Maybe you will enjoy a future version of our project which may be a bit more to your liking artwork wise.

Looking forward to finally being able to experience the Enterprise in full immersion - although our product may not be the best it can be yet, we are the first people to ever build the entire ship in a game engine and release it to the public, we're pretty proud of that fact 🙂

Cheers

Anyone see the irony of creating a VR experience of walking around a Star Trek ship, when lots of us had VR inspiration from the Holodek on STTNG, which was what they had to AVOID walking around a Star Trek ship. Freaky.
