Multitasking on the Quest 2

You can display up to three apps side-by-side in your Home environment!

QuestV30_Multitasking.gif

  • This feature only works for 2D apps, including Explore, Store, Apps, Browser, Meta Quest TV, Meta Quest Move, and more. It also works with some third-party apps, including Pi Launcher.
  • Multitasking can be enabled or disabled using the white bar that appears immediately below the middle window. (Note: The image above was from an earlier version of the Quest software which did not display a white bar.)
    • To enable multitasking, drag the white bar upwards until the app window snaps into its largest size.
    • To disable multitasking, drag the white bar downwards until the app window snaps into its smallest size.
  • Apps can be positioned in one of three positions: left, center, or right.
  • To open an app in a desired position, drag its icon from the universal menu or from the Apps library window.
  • To reposition an app that is  already open, drag the control bar at the bottom of the app's window. (The control bar displays the app name and buttons to close or minimize it.)
  • If you close or minimize an app and then reopen it within the same session, it will reopen in its previous position.
  • For apps like the Browser that support multiple tabs, drag a tab to open it as a separate window in a different position. The icon on the universal menu will change to indicate that multiple windows are available, and clicking the icon will allow you to select which window to open.
  • For some apps, white resizing bars will appear when you hover your pointer over a corner of the window. Drag a resizing bar to make the window narrower or wider.
  • The white bar that appears below the universal menu can be dragged to move the universal menu and all open windows at once, as a group.

History: Multitasking was first released in experimental mode in June 2021, and was officially implemented in April 2022.

Problem

Hi, thanks for your tip but this doesn't work at all for me.  When I drag a 2D app or a tab from the Meta Browser, they don't separate  into another window.  I thought perhaps I need to enable it in settings but nothing shows up in settings to enable multitasking either.  My quest 2 is fully updated anyone have any ideas why I can't achieve opening more than one 2d app or browser tab in separate windows? Thanks

Update:  I finally figured it out! The step you mention about dragging the white bar up and down is what I missed. But that is because you mention that step as the second to last step.

Suggestion: I think it will help others if you make that step (enable/disable) as the third step rather than near the end because by default, the multitasking and repositioning is disabled.

Thanks, @YouCanCallMeTJ , that was a great suggestion. πŸ‘ I edited my original post. Do you think it's better?

Yes I think that's much better...one more suggestion, Instead of saying "all the way Up" or "all the way down", I think it's would be more accurate to say "drag the white bar upwards until the app window snaps into it's largest size" and "drag the white bar downwards until the app window snaps into its smallest size".

Or something along those lines to avoid anyone interpreting "all the way up/down" too literally.

Well done with creating this tip!

@YouCanCallMeTJ, thanks for another great suggestion. Done! πŸ™‚

Hey @deejeevee! Thank you for providing that information. I had forgotten this option existed. It'll be interesting to hear how this benefits other users!

Kudos, kudos and more kudos!
