The DK2 lenses are TERRIBLE - they scratch far to easily.

I have had my DK2 kit for less than a day and only used the supplied Oculus microfiber cloth to clean the lenses. I had the DK1 for a year and never got a scratch on the lens. This afternoon I thought the lenses seemed dirty, upon closer inspection I was shocked to find the lenses had swirl scratches all over both of them. This is very disappointing and unless I got a bad pair of lenses it is going to be a problem with all the DK2 lenses, no matter how careful people are with them.

I have also posted this on Reddit: http://redd.it/2cdoaz

My advice, please do your best to be extra cautious with your own lenses, they will get scratched but maybe if you are super careful they'll last a little longer. Oculus, you need to come up with a solution for these lenses, they are not durable enough, not for a development kit, and certainly not for a consumer model.

what i dont get is how in the world Oculus did not encounter this issue themselves..i mean it takes a few seconds to test it and see if it can scratch the lenses or not, they could have fix that and improve either their lenses or their cleaning cloth, and i wonder if Oculus are aware of this problem or not, i hope theyll fix it atleast for the next batches of delivery.

After reading the Reddit PSA I went to check my lens. Tried wiping them with my own cleaning cloth that I use for my glasses without problems. And sure as hell I scratched them - on the rounded part that faces the display.

Also I noticed that the second lens (left eye) already had a scratch in them straight from factory - again on the inner side. Trying to "clean" the lens with Original DK2 cloth results in micro scratches.

Note that at least on my DK2 - the rounded part of the lens seems a lot more vulnerable. Some scratches appear on the flat part of the lens too - but the rounded part is insanely vulnerable.

Anybody else noticed similar symptoms? What am I supposed to do now? Can I get a more durable pair? Can I buy replacements on my own somewhere? Can I get these polished?

Damn I have been wiping mine after every use due to head grease. Wish I had left the shipping hplastic on. I wonder what chances are of oculus putting antiscratch coating on future runs and replacing ours? Dev kit or not it is suboptimal if the lenses are scratched to fudge
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

don't have mine yet, but why doesn't someone take these lenses to a local optician and see what a expert thinks about them and if there is anything that we can do with them. :ugeek:

The included cloth also caused my lens to get very scratched up as well.

I've cleaned them several times but fortunately i do not have scratches on them. Maybe it's true what some say, might be a bad batch that didn't get the coating.

What i do think is stupid is the "oculus"text on the cloth. Move with that text over the lens and i'm sure you get scratches.

Can you get this antiscratch coating done at an opticians? Just a thought.

What's odd is that there doesn't appear to be any consistency to how this is happening. Some people are reporting these scratches using their own cleaning cloths (while some aren't having the issue), and others are reporting it with the DK2 cloth. I guess the only scenario I don't recall seeing is somebody saying they've used the DK2 cloth with no issues.

In my case, I cleaned my lenses yesterday (none too gently actually) with an old microfiber cloth made for eyeglasses from a pharmacy. FWIW, I did use a good bit of air beforehand. After reading this thread today, I studied them in all forms of light to look for the scratches but wasn't seeing anything. In fact, I looked under a hobby light while I cleaned with my microfiber...and nothing

Confirmation bias aside...I opened up my DK2 cloth out of curiosity, and it really does have a rough feel to it (even compared to the DK1 cloth). I realize that microfiber cloths can be coarse as kitchen towels so not saying that means anything.

Some optics do offer the service to do the coating to your glasses but i doubt they will do the job with a lens like the ones of the rift, unless is a big optic who specializes in many kinds of lenses and not just eyeglasses. still is a good idea to ask the optic, what if they really could. 😉
I am gonna send a quotation to this company http://www.diamonex.com/ which does Diamond Like Carbon coatings, this is the extreme in scratch resistant coatings, to see how much they charge for the job and if is too much i am going to try to coat the rift's lenses by myself but i haven't tried to do CVD or something this before, i only have used my vacuum chamber to do metal sputtering and some crazy amounts of X-rays . of course only if i can borrow some ultra pure methane, hydrogen, argon from my school, if i can't, i am going still to try with normal gases but i doubt the success because of impurities and i only have a cheap and poor oil diffusion pump with a homemade cryotrap cooled with dry ice. 😞 if i could afford some santovac 5 or a turbopump would be awesome.

Can you see the scratches, or affect the quality of the visuals while wearing the headset?
