The DK2 lenses are TERRIBLE - they scratch far to easily.

I have had my DK2 kit for less than a day and only used the supplied Oculus microfiber cloth to clean the lenses. I had the DK1 for a year and never got a scratch on the lens. This afternoon I thought the lenses seemed dirty, upon closer inspection I was shocked to find the lenses had swirl scratches all over both of them. This is very disappointing and unless I got a bad pair of lenses it is going to be a problem with all the DK2 lenses, no matter how careful people are with them.

I have also posted this on Reddit: http://redd.it/2cdoaz

My advice, please do your best to be extra cautious with your own lenses, they will get scratched but maybe if you are super careful they'll last a little longer. Oculus, you need to come up with a solution for these lenses, they are not durable enough, not for a development kit, and certainly not for a consumer model.

micro scratch on mine its impossible to use my glasses in the rift without it happening but cleaning has put very small scratches in that can only be seen if the light hits in a certain way, savies 40mm screen protectors seems to be the only option to help at the moment.
just to add all my glasses(bargain basement types mostly but with anti scratch option added) in 20 years of wearing them and being rubbed with any available fabric to clean them never scratched not sure why the rift ones are so poor.

Got my DK2 Today, i was very careful when cleaning the lenses and after a day of use i already got scratches on them,
DK1 Lenses are way more Robust then these.

Just to report: I'm affected, too.

And it's not like I wasn't careful. I always store my rift in a place where barely any dust reaches. Before cleaning the lenses I first use one of those blowers and then a brush (both photography lens cleaning stuff) to make sure that no particles remain before using the microfibre cloth to clean them 'manually'. Of course all three "tools" are stored so they don't get dust or other particles on them when not in use.

As many have mentioned before: It's not yet affecting me in the rift, but considering the effect after such a short time I really hope we'll be able to get new lenses at some point.

Oh and I got my rift at the beginning of September - so not one of the very first batches.

Used my rift for a week or so, eyelashes and cloth put some only visible in the right light kind of scratches on it.

40mm savvies arrived today, put them on. Not exactly centred 100% (less than 1mm gap around half of the lens) because I just wanted them on. Good feels to know that I can wipe them to my hearts content now when they get greasy

I received both the 40mm savvies and the DK2 yesterday.
I used the cloth provided by Oculus on one of the lenses just for test but it didn't leave any scratches luckily.
Still I've put the screen protectors on the lenses and I'm happy with the result. The protectors do not alter the image in any noticeable way and I can now use any t-shirt at hand to quickly wipe any grease/dust that is on the lenses.
Those protectors come in packs of 6 so even if you are too harsh with them I guess you can easily replace them later down the line.

ouch... my friend tried my DK2 with glasses on. Relief was out, but the glasses still hit the lenses.
sigh,,, not micro-scratches (which made no difference to me) these scratches look like scuffs. 2 of them on the left lens and they are visible when using. 😞 what a drag

Any ideas on polishing this out?

Any chance that the lenses do have protective coating on one side but were mounted backwards in many of the first DK2 batches? That could explain why some users are getting lots of scratches and others have none.

Were these A or B lenses? You can make the B lenses higher and use them as regular A lenses (in case you didn't know that already)

Should be getting my dk2 next week hopefully.

I ordered the 40mm savvies about a month ago and got a pack of 6 i believe.

should I definately put them on my lenses? So there is no noticible blurring of image or anything with the savvy protectors?
thanks
