So i Made this thread to discuss the Modding of the rift to get rid of the Screendoor effekt.

Way back a few guys modded their DK1 with Foil to get rid of it...

Im talking about the Mod with the laminating pouches about 6 Month ago.

Anyone tried it on the Dk2?

Here is an old Video

That looks great. I'm surprised I haven't seen it before. If it really works, it would be great to have it in DK2. Who needs 4K res? 😉

I plan to slap one on after the year warranty id imagine it would increase the quality big time, wonder why oculus never thought of doing that.

Palmer did think of it and consider it a undesirable trade off to use a diffuse material to eliminate the SDE. You are essentially trading image sharpness and clarity for a blurred image to hide the dark space between pixels.

However it is a matter of preference, some people prefer blurred pixels to being able to distinguish the gaps between them.

Honestly if you are still strongly bothered by the SDE you are insane. It is not very pronounced at all. Your mind will zone it out completely if you stop looking for it. I would learn to ignore it before risking damage to a new DK2.

I suppose it's an individual thing, but for me the screen door effect is a bit too distinct and it reduces the experience.
Most game demo's feels like playing on a 1024x768 CRT monitor and affects the sense of presence.
Also when watching movies with Cineveo or Vrplayer it's quite hard to see the details since the SDE is so apparent.
Have to add that I never used any Rift before receiving DK2 last week. From what I've read most people says that there's no clear SDE anymore so I'm a bit surprised it's an issue for me and I'm not exactly snobbish when it comes to picture quality in general.
Anyhow, if anyone used laminating pouches or anything similar as with the DK1 SDE mod I'm very interested in the result so please let me know.

Same, I used the B cups and found them a little more comfortable because it reduced my eyes ability to naturally focus in on the little pixels.

Ideally, I would think that having the pixels somehow interlace would give you a pretty good resolution, like an HDTV does it. Instead, because you can distinctly see the individual pixels, your eyes can't help but try to match them up.

Are there any lense mods? That would be best. I'd rather have a blurred peripherial vision and more DPI at the center of the view then have what we have now where the DPI is fairly constant looking and then it's actually higher (but blurred) on the edges.

The SDE is still very pronounced for me..but I have not found myself longing for a mod either.

So nobody has tried this? Seems like if it was effective for dk1 then you'd want something more subtle for dk2

To answer my own question...

I used a cut of plastic bag that game with the rift to just do a proof of concept, and placed the cut squares under the lense and then screwed the lense on. I found that it gave a little diffusion - not enough to elminate the effect, but enough to more importantly prevent your eyes from focusing on the individual pixels.

Overall, I'd say it's am improvement. The downside is that things glow, and the plastic bag has imperfections in it, so a better material that could diffuse without the glow effect would be ideal.

Overall, I found this more comfortable, because it was more like playing the game on a big CRT TV than trying to watch a TV show when the reception staticy. I'm leaving the plastic bag cuts in for now to see if my opinion of them diminishes long term.

I didn't really think is really necessary using something to mod a DK 2 to reduce the screendoor.

Right now it seems to be really good and isn't annoying. On the 70-80% of the time you aren't really able to see it,if you want you can focus to see the SDE and you obviusly see it,but during your gameplay isn't so muche easy to be distract from it anymore.
