*The* Direct Mode Issue Thread

cybereality

I'm trying to pull together a list of configuration and issue information from people having issues with Direct Mode. While there are tons of reports in the forum, it's hard to keep track of all of them or understand if the issues have been solved with recent software, etc. So I am asking if anyone with Direct Mode problems can post in this thread.

Please reply in the following format:

PC Type: [Desktop or Laptop]
Optimus: [e.g. Yes, Optimus]
GPU: [e.g. Nvidia GTX 970]
Multi-GPU: [e.g. Yes, SLI]
Video Driver: [e.g. 344.75]
OS Version: [e.g. Windows 7 64-bit]
Oculus Runtime: [e.g. 0.4.4]
Problem: [e.g. Apps crash on launch]

Your participation in this survey will help us troubleshoot the issue. Thanks, guys.

Optimus: No
GPU: AMD R8 280x
Multi-GPU: No
Video Driver: Will update with the exact driver later (not at home). Certainly not the latest driver.
OS Version: Windows 7 64-bit
Oculus Runtime: 0.4.4
Problem:

1)On my project If mirror mode is disabled, I only get about 1 frame every 3-5 seconds and the screen bounds go haywire. Otherwise its fine, a steady 75fps, no crashing. Additional info: I am a dev and used the latest 0.4.4 unity integration, uses DIrectX 11 and game is built on Unity version 4.5.3p2. If you like PM me and I can send you a copy so you can replicate.

2) Not detected on bootup. Must go into "screen resolution" and click "Detect" before using the Rift DK2. Otherwise its not recognised in any game or even the Oculus tool.

GPU: Nvidia GTX M970
Multi-GPU: No (except optimus)

OS Version: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Oculus Runtime: 0.4.4 (happens with 0.4.3 too)
Problem: When the primary display is one that's connected to the Intel GPU (according to the nVidia control panel), Direct Mode doesn't work (says that Rift is on GPU 0, but rendering on GPU 1) - even if Rift is plugged into a port that is actually on the nVidia GPU.

On the contrast, when there's an external display connected to nVidia GPU and made primary, Direct Mode works flawlessly even if Rift is plugged into a port that's connected to Intel GPU.

The only distinguishing factor seems to be on what GPU is the primary display, not to what GPU is the Rift connected to. Unfortunately the internal display is on Intel GPU, so when I have just the Rift, I cannot use DirectMode.

Problem: The Rift used to work perfectly on my previous rig, direct mode was a charm, it ALWAYS worked, never once did it not work, this was on a amd phenom II x6 1055t with a gtx 780. I have now bought this new rig as displayed above and I had this problem where the Rift only had the camera working for 2 seconds, then It dissapeared, no matter what usb port, no matter what I tried.

Until I put the external power cable in which I never had to use before, now my camera works, but only in extended, Direct to rift mode NEVER works anymore, and I can't mirror anymore, I need to disable my main monitor for it to work, I have no demo scene either.

Sorry for the long explanation about the problem, wanted to give some context.

EDIT: Everything runs perfect again, no idea how :D, all the direct mode's suddenly work again

Problem : Error pop up : Rift is on GPU 0, but rendering on GPU 1.

However I do have to say that most of my game seems to be recognizing only my integrated card when no displays are connected to Laptop, even though I think they are still using the NVidia one as I don't think Elite would run that smoothly on ultra graphics with the Integrated card.

Problem: Some direct mode apps are fine, while others give me about 1 frame every 4 seconds. Running in extended mode while still using the direct to rift exe those same apps run fine. Updating to 0.4.4 made some that previously worked now have the lag, while others now work. Very weird issue.

I am running triple mismatched monitors in addition to the rift, one is 1080p 60hz that I overdrive to 75hz, the other two are older 4:3 ratio at 60hz.

Hope this helps!

I just discovered my computer is infected with a bitcoin mining virus, which was certainly interfering with CPU and GPU. So some (but not all) of my direct mode issues were probably related to that. I'll need to clean my system and test again. Everyone else who is having issues with direct mode might also want to check for viruses and other malware, especially if they disabled some of their malware protections to avoid false positives with Rift demos.

CPU type seems important to this 'poll' too, does it not?

Problem: Apps getting stuck at 37.5 FPS (even the desk demo!) or crashing. Have found that sometimes, in the case of MaxVR for example, I can fix the problem by enabling 'Perfer maximum performance' in Power Management Mode in my settings. But this does not work across the board unfortunately.

Problem: Oculus screen always blank when running apps in direct mode. Blue light comes on, but the screen remains blank. Apps work fine in Extended mode.
