The New Virtual Reality Player Guide to VR legs.

Hello and welcome new VR player. You are in for a truly exciting adventure! However as with any adventure, first it must begin with a single step.

Virtual reality, while extremely fun and worthwhile, is also very taxing to most people’s bodies at first. However, this issue can be overcome, but it takes time. At first a new VR user should keep their experiences very calm. While the intense games are indeed fun, it is not advised to jump into them right away.

One thing to keep in mind is how you feel, if you start to feel motion sick, even a little, then it is time to take a break until you feel better. You see, if you do choose to go further after that point is reached it will only make it exponentially worse. However, with that said, it is equally important to play frequently as well.

With all the above guidelines stated, here are the steps I recommend any new VR player take. Keeping the principles above in mind, of course.

  1. Start with a slow game. A good example of this is “walk about mini golf, “VR fishing”, "Beat Saber" or ‘Space pirate VR” it will allow you to get used to being in a virtual environment with limited fatigue.
  2. Ensure that regardless of the game you choose, any movement settings are set to “teleport”, this is the best and easiest way to slowly get used to VR movement. After you can handle this for about 1 – 2 hours with no issues, then move onto the next step.
  3. Now that you can handle a VR game with teleporting movement for about 1 or 2 hours. Switch on normal turn and locomotion settings. Get used to those settings until you can handle fast smooth locomotion for about 2 – 3 hours with no motion sickness experienced. Then move onto the next step.

Ok, now it has probably been a couple of months or longer since you started playing, that is great, you’re doing great. At this stage it is time to “take the final step” so to speak and truly acquire what many in the VR realm call “VR legs”. Remember it is crucial to only play until you feel a little bit of nausea and then stop, do not force yourself any further after that. It will take some time to build up tolerance little by little. However, eventually the day will come when VR feels normal to you.

  1. Begin playing a more intense game now. Some recommendations would be “Hell Sweeper VR”, “Hubris”, “Dungeons of Eternity”, “Dead hook”, “Hyper Dash”, “Zennith”, or “Guardians VR. Any of these amazing titles and many others, are great to get started with this stage and master it.                                                        Ensure you have most motion sickness prevention settings turned off and that you are playing with intense movement. Now just like before start taking it a little bit at a time until you can handle 2 – 3 hours without any nausea. Once you have reached this achievement you should truly be proud, for now you have acquired “VR legs”. At this stage you can now spend more and more time in VR at a time as time goes. To maintain it just ensure you play VR at least twice a week at intense settings for 30 minutes or more on average. Most importantly, have fun!

*Tip: Using motion relief bracelets called “sea bands” worn correctly with the hard nodule facing the “P6 acupressure point in the wrists” and/or using a fan pointed at you helps, however eventually attune yourself to being able to handle VR without them. *

Well, that’s it, thank you for reading this article, if you want any further advice just comment below, I myself and I am sure many other community members will be happy to chime in.

You can do this! I too started with extreme motion sickness. However, I was able to overcome it, although I took a bit more of a painful route than this by forcing myself at first, which I regret, please for your own good do not be like I was at first. After implementing the strategy above I can now literally play for 20 or more hours if I wanted to. However, I rarely have time for more than a few hours. There are times though that I can get in an insane amount of gameplay; and I have done about 25 hours strait once in very intense games, not recommended, but it is proof of concept.

My Best,

OMG, thanks so much; I really appreciate this most useful information.  I truly thought I had to force myself.  I did force myself one night and I was sick until the morning.  And because I know the Quest 3 is more intense than Quest 2, is another reason I haven't purchased it yet.  I can handle the Beat Saber and boxing for hours, but nothing else.
