The Oculus Rift Will Cost at Least $300

The Oculus lift will cost at least $300. That's what VP of Product, Nate Mitchell, told PC Gamer. This consumer version of the Oculus Rift will also include a sensor and a Xbox One Controller, and is currently set to release in the first quarter of 2016.

He gave a minimum price, but additional information has not yet been revealed. As such, the pre-orders aren't open yet. Mitchell offered an explanation for that:

"There isn't a big reason to take your money too far ahead of the device. What I think about all day long is user experience, right? So if I'm going to promise you something and you're going to hand me a significant amount of money or whatever it is—we all know it's going to be at least $300—if you're going to hand me $300 today, I am not going to be excited to tell you: ‘OK, in nine, 10, 12, 11 months, whatever it is, you're going to get something in return.’ The longer you wait, the more you're like, ‘This is obnoxious.’"
To clarify what he sees as an ideal user experience, he gave Apple as an example: "They announce it, one week later you can pre-order it, the next week it ships. That is like the ideal user experience."

Did you expect the Oculus Rift to be more than $300 USD, or were you hoping it was going to be a little less pricey? Let us know in the comments below!

$300 wouldn't be too bad, but those of us unlucky enough to live in the UK will get shafted and have to pay £300 I expect

Still, I'm going to have around 500 quid or so saved up before I'm planning to get one in November next year

If HTC Vive releases for $300 before Christmas things might start to get interesting lol

Cheaper would certainly be better in terms of adoption, but as it stands the CV1 is going to be superior in just about every way to the DK2 and is coming bundled with a controller that retails for $50, so it seems unreasonable to expect it to be more than $50 cheaper.

I think this works out fine, Gear is poised to dominate the mid-range VR market and for serious PC gamers, $300 is about the price of a high-end graphics card, so they're used to spending that sort of money on their hobby. What we have yet to learn is how much the Vive will cost, it will likely be more, but how much more is going to determine a lot in the current VR race.

My understanding is that it will cost between $300-400 and up to $550-650 with touch controllers. Then again ~ they might actually add their percent on top instead of selling at cost. I hate to say it ~ but other than the screen it self, there isn't much "cost" to a HMD at all. The camera and the screens will be the only "big" factor. Even then, camera tech is getting cheaper and cheaper because of phone tech. With the help from Samsung, they probability have access to higher end cell phone cameras that they already create and would sell cheap enough at. Over all means lest cost to the customer and more gear for the same price.

Even if the MS controller retails for 50$ - they make it for less than 10$ ~ so I can see it being closer to the 300-350$ mark instead of the 400$ mark. Then another $250 for the touch controllers + camera.

I did expect it to be in the 300$+ price range since that's what we were told even at the kickstarter phase.
Personally, I expect at least 25% more than that, and couldn't be any happier if I could get it at the same price of the Dk2. Dk1 price would be straight out awesome, that case I would preorder at least two sets for fun like using one as a driver and giving one to the passenger while playing Richard Burns Rally.

I'm hoping I will be able to buy a discounted version that does not come with the Xbox controller; I already have one.

So 10-30$ less? That be pointless O.o; I don't think they will sell a discounted version. It's just not a big enough discount that it be worth for the customer. Might as well include one and if you already have one ~ just keep it connected to your xbox while you keep the Oculu's controller connected to the PC.

My prediction about Rift cost: $400 + $100 shipment. Total $500.
Touch price is about $150 and $100 shipment. Total $250.
Full bundle: Rift + Touch = $750

Doesn't matter what it costs, either way I'm buying the first VR headset I can.

What ever they launch the Rift at your going to want another $100-150 just for the touch controllers later on. The fact it comes bundled with an xbox pad means nothing, trying to play a VR game with a joypad is nauseating from my experience.

The way I see it and from how international trade works in general, if you have $500 set a side you should be able to buy on day 1.

That applies to the UK/Europe as well but in each respective currency, £500/500 Euro or equivalent.

Definitely $400 in my opinion.

I'd be shocked if it goes for less. But happy.
