The Oculus lift will cost at least $300. That's what VP of Product, Nate Mitchell, told PC Gamer. This consumer version of the Oculus Rift will also include a sensor and a Xbox One Controller, and is currently set to release in the first quarter of 2016.

He gave a minimum price, but additional information has not yet been revealed. As such, the pre-orders aren't open yet. Mitchell offered an explanation for that:

"There isn't a big reason to take your money too far ahead of the device. What I think about all day long is user experience, right? So if I'm going to promise you something and you're going to hand me a significant amount of money or whatever it is—we all know it's going to be at least $300—if you're going to hand me $300 today, I am not going to be excited to tell you: ‘OK, in nine, 10, 12, 11 months, whatever it is, you're going to get something in return.’ The longer you wait, the more you're like, ‘This is obnoxious.’"
To clarify what he sees as an ideal user experience, he gave Apple as an example: "They announce it, one week later you can pre-order it, the next week it ships. That is like the ideal user experience."

Did you expect the Oculus Rift to be more than $300 USD, or were you hoping it was going to be a little less pricey? Let us know in the comments below!

Was expecting more like $450; I did not expect it to be around $500 since that would be the turning point on whether people try it just for the hell on a product that is still unproven, and Oculus goal is still to get these into the hands as many people as possible. One day when it proven they could start selling these things for 6, 7, 8 hundred just like they do with smart phones and monitors.

I reckon we're going to see the HTC Vive retailing for $400-500/£400-500 and Oculus undercutting them. They have to basically. There are usually two VERY important factors in deciding the winners of audio visual 'format wars'. Firstly the retail price and secondly which format the porn industry supports. Palmer Luckey saying that they were leaving the door open for VR porn was HUGELY important news for the future of the hardware.

Well not surprising, not even a question I had concerning porn anymore then asking if Windows 10 will allow porn; the Rift is just a tricked out monitor running on a PC, not a self-contained console. Question about porn would go to Sony because there’s will be self-contained.

$300 wouldn't be too bad, but those of us unlucky enough to live in the UK will get shafted and have to pay £300 I expect

Still, I'm going to have around 500 quid or so saved up before I'm planning to get one in November next year

If HTC Vive releases for $300 before Christmas things might start to get interesting lol

When the Vive was announced, it was clearly stated that it will be more expensive than the Oculus.
