The Oculus Web Browser: Carmel

One of the most exciting announcements at Oculus Connect 3 was that Oculus is working on it's own VR web browser called Carmel
http://uploadvr.com/carmel-oculus-web-browser-support-webvr/

I wonder how soon we will see this? At OC3 they only said a developer preview would be "coming soon".

What are people doing now for VR web browsing?  I have honestly not tried anything. Is anyone using WebVR with their Rift? What is React VR?

Sorry to be so vague, I just wanted to start a discussion on Carmel because there is nothing yet on these forums about it and I would like to hear about VR web browsing in general.

When I first got my rift I used Virtual Desktop to browse the web in VR 'just because I could' but the text size etc just doesn't work in VR so I haven't done any since 🙂

Web needs to be re-designed again for VR like it was for mobile

I think that's the point of Carmel. To redesign it for VR.  But there are already thingks such as WebVR and React VR that I know nothing about.  Have you tried these?

When you used Virtual Desktop for browsing, it's not really 3D. It's just a projection onto a curved surface in 3D space so I don't see the point in using Virtual Desktop for web browsing. Maybe I'm wrong? Do you use Virtual Desktop with WebVR to get some content with depth?

I haven't tried WebVR or ReactVR, I don't think browsing the web in VR is convenient enough for me at the moment. I do most of my web browsing on my phone and then when I actually have time at home to go on my Rift I wanna play games! 🙂

Yeah using Virtual Desktop is pretty pointless for browsing the Web, but I still kinda feel that way about all web browsing in VR, I'm hoping Oculus will convince me I'm wrong with Carmel!

I think it will become interesting when websites start designing their sites with VR support, then we'll start seeing some cool stuff!

I thought about something. It is just a little conspiracy theory, so don't take it too seriously:
The standalone HMD will be a closed system. You can't use a gaming PC or a smartphone for it. So, how do you use it? Where will the software come from? Or will it use Carmel only? It could use some sort of wireless internet connection.

Maybe Carmel will be a closed browser. And the only sites you can go to are made or permitted by Facebook.

If it's a closed browser than Tim Bernes-Lee will be very disappointed.  But who knows, Zuckerberg is a big fan of Gates. I would much prefer his hero was Tim Bernes-Lee or Richard Stallman. I certainly admire Tim Bernes-Lee a lot more than Gates. Stallman has been accused of conspiracy theories, he's even suggested using tin foil to cover some badges at conferences. But Stallman has turned out to be right about many of the things people said he was silly about.

Anyway, my post is about web browsing in VR, it's too easy to get me talking about other topics.

Right. I think web VR is the killer app (beside porn). We need more than a couple of games. If we are able to use web browsing in VR, then the real change begins.

Hmm...I was hoping for some comments from some people that had used e.g. WebVR.  I think  @Zenbane has commented on some VR web browsing in other posts. I guess I have to to some searches. I was hoping others could do the research for me. I was also hoping to hear any more information about Carmel.
