The Power Of The Oculus Rift

Ok, I have tried a million demos with the Rift and loved every one of them. Until a few minutes ago I have never took the time to watch You Tube videos in it. I was browsing the You Tube search results and this was the first video I found. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXYSYJtQfmw

While watching it on my normal monitor I had the thought that I didn't even want to waste my time putting my Rift on my face to check out what it looks like. After all, it was just some anime cartoon singing in front of a less than average backdrop. After a short pause I decided to give it a shot since the page was loaded already. All I can say is...

Holy Cow, videos in the Rift are Freaking amazing!

For some reason my brain was thinking that the low resolution of a demo app could generate an excellent 3D virtual reality environment but the same low resolution in a You Tube video wouldn't be able to create the same immersive experience. Boy was I wrong. It's quite fascinating to see how a 720p video can be split between 2 eyes and once rendered in the Rift create such an all emcomposing world with so little data.

A wide FOV and 3D combined create an experience that adds up to far greater than the sum of its parts. Rifties (Rift Movies) are better than any 3d movie I have seen in a theater... IMAX included. The Oculus Rift really is mind-blowing.
“My ally is the Force. Life creates it, makes it grow. It’s energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we…not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you. Here, between you, me, the tree, the rock…everywhere!"

I've been watching videos on youtube as well, but I've noticed that the experience isn't nearly as enjoyable as playing something first hand, or watching a 3d IMAX movie. The complete lack of head tracking can cause some sickness, especially due to the fact that all movements are enslaved to whomever recorded the video, and you might not be able to correctly anticipate some of the movements.

That particular video doesn't look like it'd be too bad, as a lot of the movements are fairly gentle, but in some gameplay videos I've seen, they can be wrenching.
