The ULTIMATE "Is My PC Good Enough?" (for DK2) Thread

OK, by popular demand I am making one single "is my PC good enough thread" that will be stickied.

If anyone creates a new thread about this, it will be locked immediately.

Please, this thread should be for DK2 only. Nobody knows what CV1 will need, and if you are only preparing for the next version of the Rift, then you should wait and make an informed purchase at that time.

I will start. I am using a:

- Intel i7-3820 @ 3.6GHz
- Nvidia GTX 680 previously (now GTX 970)
- 16GB DDR3
- Windows 7 64-bit

Mostly all the demos I have tested will work in both Direct and Extended Mode. I haven't done extensive benchmarking, but it's mostly a smooth experience. Some games do have judder, but I'm not sure it's only performance related.

One thing to note: laptops have really poor support for the Rift. Especially with switchable graphics (Optimus) there are hardware limitations that cannot be fixed with a software patch, and will probably never work correctly. If you are buying a new computer today I am STRONGLY RECOMMENDING that you DO NOT purchase a laptop for VR development. You will be sorry if you go down this road and most likely performance will be slow and the games will crash. In almost all cases, a good desktop machine will be significantly better than a laptop you can purchase at the same price.

Please join in with a list of your system specs and if you have a smooth experience with DK2.

I just overclocked my GeForce GTX 980M that previously scored 8613 on the Fire Strike 1.1 test (658 below Oculus Recommended), and now it scored 9461 (190 above).

So now my laptop with a 980M is, at least in the eyes of 3DMark, above Recommended for the Oculus Rift CV1

As long as it doesn't have Optimus

So my mission was to find a new laptop that didn't have what I like to call "Optimus crap" - and I found the Asus ROG G751JY. It simply only have one display adapter and it is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M with 4GB RAM. (It also have 4 USB 3 ports so I'm more than set there also).

Hi, I'm glad I've found this discussion. I have the same laptop (Asus ROG G751JY) and I get APC_INDEX_MISMATCH BSOD each time the Oculus start (when I start a demo or when I try to measure the eyes distance).

spec: win8.1 64bit, i7-4720HQ, 24gb ram
geforce GTX 980m with the latest driver (361.75)

I tried on SDK / Runtime V0.7.0.0-beta and V0.8.0.0-beta, same problem, I'm getting the BSOD APC_INDEX_MISMATCH. Any clue ? The headset and the tracker are detected in the configuration utility. I'm not looking for an awesome frame rate experience, I have a DK2 at work and I just want to test it to make a tutorial...

thanks !

There are really only two things that displays a bsod - hardware or driver errors. This can include everything from disk corruption to memory error.

Are you only getting this error when trying to run the Oculus Rift? Maybe a hardware problem on the USB or HDMI parts of the headset or computer? Short circuit or power management problem maybe?

Anyway, I would run a complete disk check first.

If you can't get rid of the bsod I would do a complete reinstall of your system with a full format and maybe install Windows 10. If you still get the same problem then it has to be hardware malfunction. Most likely the computer but could also be the headset.

Also, I'm running EVE: Valkyrie fluently so you can expect at least some level of awesome frame rate.

I'm rocking 512 MBS of RAM and Intel HD graphics, and to top it off, I have a hamster inside of my pc on a running wheel as a CPU. Runs games pretty fast.

Would my AMD 7990 be good enough?

I can the "Can my PC run Oculus fine, and everything exceeds the recommended specs, but of course my GPU.

When I compare what they told me to get to my 7990, my current card exceeds the benchmarks and everything else. My card is two years old, but has Direct X 12, and everything else the GTX 970 has.

What do you guys think? My PC is good enough, and exceeds everything but their recommended GPU.

The AMD 7990 should be new enough to be technically compatible (meaning games will likely be able to run). However, multi-GPU is not yet fully supported and can cause compatibility issues. In most cases, you would have to turn SLI/Crossfire off to play a game, or, in the best case, leave it on but receive now benefit from the secondary cards. So, in your case, I don't think the card will have enough power when only using a single chip.

If you're wanting the rift for 360 videos only, you might be better off with the gear vr. Its videos look slightly better and it's cheaper. One of the main downsides is you don't get positional tracking, so no leaning. But it only needs a compatible phone and the headset so no wires.

To answer your question, the cpu might be adequate, but I think the absolute minimum to still get an image is gtx 750. It used to be 650, but updates and such upped the requirement. This is based on another thread, someone said they had a 660 but they had to upgrade after version 0.7.
