The VR E-Sports Thread

Home-based VR is about to get an upgrade. The concept of E-Sports has been a thing for quite a few years now. But prior to 2020, these types of sporting events typically took place physically, by attending a facility in-person in order to complete.

But that's old news! The barriers of physical facilities have been broken down, slowly but surely, over the last few years. With sites like Amazon.com removing the need for shopping malls; streaming services like Hulu and Netflix making Movie Theaters less enticing; we now have VR to usher in a new era of Home Entertainment that has hastened the removal of physical barriers.

Virtual Athletics League(VAL) is a leading VR E-Sports organization. And they are bringing a $25,000 prize for VR E-Sports to all of you enjoying VR in your homes next month (September 2020).

Virtual Athletics League has partnered with some of the largest names in VR fitness and esports to host a VR Fitness Summit that will feature a prize pool of $25,000 across a variety of tournaments and contests that will take place from September 3 through 12 with qualifiers for some events starting this week.

While the focus is on improving one’s physical health and wellness with VR, participants have an opportunity win some sweet prizes as well! With a combined prize pool of $25,000 across the various games, including $5,000 in the Topgolf Pro Putt competition, the VR Fitness Summit collaboration is the largest prize pool ever for an online-only VR event.

For all you walking dead players, sign up (link in the main post) for the upcoming undead event.

The Apocalypse Games will consist of the following competitions:
  • ARCHERY: The most focused and precise Apoc-olympians must survive armed with only a bow and arrows. The highest number of arrow kills takes the gold. A tiebreaker is determined by highest score.
  • WALKER BASKETBALL: The sport that’s one part decapathon and nothing is out of bounds! At the gymnasium, each competitor has 5 minutes to collect and throw as many walker heads through the basketball hoop as they can. 1 point per head.
  • MARATHON: Apoc-olympians will attempt to survive to wave 20 in the Trial. Whoever fights through the pain, sweat, and bladder control to cross the finish line at the highest wave takes home the gold. Highest score breaks the tie.
  • FIGURE SLAYING: Slayers will attempt to rack up the most points with stylish and difficult kills in the Trial before being chowed down in walker town. In the event of a tie, highest kill total wins the gold.

I just hope you win because you'll probably need a new VR headset after playing Thrill of the Fight for several rounds. I destroyed my Oculus CV1 dripping buckets of sweat playing that game. It's an excellent game, but I'd advise you to stop playing when your sweating.
