Something I've noticed plenty since receiving my DK2 over a year ago is that more and more I get nauseous / simulator-sick when I sense that distinctive plastic-smell of the hardware.
I think all my accumulated experiences with bad-demos (that do not adhere well to 'vr-laws') and the resulting simulator sickness have subconsciously been attached to the smell of the HMD. Sometimes with the DK2 in-hand I feel ill even before starting up any software.
Is this a recognised challenge at Oculus? Hopefully Rift CV1 will be close to odor-less. I have no such problems with GearVR.
That's interesting!! I get like that with certain brands of alcohol...
Still, it's worrying that this old survival mechanism can apply to other things. It sort of seems your body is "learning" that VR == illness so it's encouraging you to stay away.
I wonder, do you stop immediately the moment you sense you're starting to feel uneasy? It's very important to stop the moment you realise something is wrong. I'm not saying you must be doing it, but if you are, never try and push through the sickness; that can exacerbate any problems.
Same here. And the same thing happens to me with the smell of the cars. The newer the worst.
I kept the Rift on the outside several nights with the hope of removing the smell but no luck. I did not try any trick to remove the smell with baking soda or similar, or perhaps a softener, though. But I'd prefer it to have no smell 'cos it really triggers nausea.
Hmm... I see an opportunity to become rich here, by selling "VR Snorkels". Anyone wants to Paypal me a fiver, I'll send you a pair of really short straws you can shove up your nostrils
I'm only half kidding!! I could do with one myself, wearing a VR Cover on the DK2 leaves less room for the nose and restricts airflow - a nice VR snorkel to open up the airways, that's just what I need  maybe make them out of rubbery silicone or something.
Maybe another approach is to reassign the trigger… Keep your Rift with you when doing something very pleasurable and when you feel good you sniff it out 😄
