Thought about Motion Control Gloves

Hey all,

So, since a lot of VR HMD's (even the Oculus) will rely on regular controller input, I wondered what everyone's thoughts are regarding Motion Control Gloves like these:

http://www.manusmachina.com/

Personally I think these peripherals could increase the user's level of immersion, especially with motion tracking VR set-ups like the Vive, and I would love to try them out and see what they are capable of. Atm, the website states that the first dev kit will cost $279 per pair, what would you find to be an acceptable price?

If they were up to $150 a pair, then I would buy them & if there are games that support them. Even without, you could map hand movement to the game's controls, or use the gloves as regular controllers. I think that when more companies pop up that make devices like these for a consumer price that a healthy market for VR peripherals could be sustained.

It all depend on the latency.

You cannot have something that have any kind of lag or you are screwed. On their website FAQ they say 12ms latency which is pretty low but I would need to see it before ordering something like this (like what happens when you move your hands very fast).

And like you said, if the devs dont integrate this technology in their games/apps... whats the point.

The interactions could be quite well integrated with Leap's technology. I never really liked the Leap because of it inaccuracy, but you could use the same basic form of interacting to work in a virtual space.

This forum post has some great thought on VR GUI which could work with these gloves, hololens, leap and other motion controllers.

I hate to say ~ theses are cool ~ but wont happen for a while and/or have a rough start. Right now HMD are still a major thing we have to over come before we start using gloves. Even then, touch and vive wand are controller base - so it'll be even longer from the major companies as well to support something like this in future VR releases. I hope it works out! I am sure though it will take a year once CV1 release before dev support extra side items.

I have the leap and I dont really like it either... This thing is not accurate enough and keep loosing the focus of your hands

I think these gloves would get sweaty pretty quickly, although you could keep your room cool to offset it.

If these had haptic capabilities they would be a bit more sellable. I think a tracked haptic controller will offer more VR interactions than something like this.

Have you had a chance to try our VR troubleshooting guide? Poor calibration, low framerates, and environmental conditions can all lead to subpar tracking.

Truly the best 80’s VR had to offer! Sarcasm off they are already developing Camera Hand tracking.
