Thoughts on new oculus devices using trackpads rather than analog sticks

Javelin396

so recently we have seen that the oculus go/santa cruz project have been shown to the public with controllers that use trackpads instead of analog sticks. Personally, i've never tried using anything with a trackpad and am quite partial to analog sticks since they're what im used to using for gaming. In fact it was one of the factors i gave serious consideration to in regards to my purchase of the oculus over the vive when i got mine originally back in december. Perhaps its too early in development for both the oculus go/santa cruz to know for sure but i'm wondering if the development of future oculus hardware is really  going to go in the direction of trackpads over analog sticks? For those that have tried both i would be interested to hear what your thoughts are regarding your preferences between the two.

Analog sticks will always trump trackpads for me. The Oculus Go has been confirmed to have trackpads as its final design due to the binary compatibility that it has with the Gear VR but the Santa Cruz input is still up in the air.

I can't see Oculus having trackpads for the CV2 controllers because they know how much more popular they are compared to trackpads. All you need to do is take a look at the Vive and Oculus sub-Reddits to see this, there are plenty of Vive owners that prefer to have analog sticks on the Vive controllers (although a fair few of those are ones that have had their trackpads breaking to be fair lol).

If the CV2 motion controllers ship with trackpads instead of joysticks, I may weep for decades.

No. PC VR won't get trackpads, cause it would be absolute joke for games.

Since  Santa Cruz focuses on  non-gaming VR and non-gamers, it will be focused more on comport, looks and things like "let's not make a joystick here, cause my wife will run away if she sees it. She hates games and is scared of gaming controllers". Trackpads will be enough for what they aim for.
But if CV2 ever gets released, you will be able to use joysticks. Well. Maybe not out of the box, cause you can get just trackpads, if history of Xbox One controller is anything to go by, but you will always be able to buy a bundle with joystick. A year later. (that last part is more of a pinch than a forecast, don't treat it too seriously ;]).
Not an Oculus hater, but not a fan anymore. Still lots of respect for the team-Carmack, Abrash. Oculus is driven by big corporation principles now. That brings painful effects already, more to come in the future. This is not the Oculus I once cheered for.

i absolutely HATE trackpads and would not purchase any product if I were forced to use them.

Not a fan of track pads, but I've heard people on here say that Oculus do good R & D, so there must be some good reasoning behind the use of track pads.

I feel the same way.  This could be a deal breaker for me regarding the CV2.  I don't have the numbers behind this but I've heard many accounts from Vive owners complain about their trackpads breaking after a while.

I doubt the CV2 will have trackpads though.  We'll just have to wait and see.  I would be perfectly happy using my CV1 motion controllers with CV2 if allowed.

I think you're all worrying for nothing. Oculus Touch Controllers are amazing, there's no need for Oculus to change them.

They should just work on CV2 HMD and use the existing controllers. "If it's not broken and all that...

This makes sense as it would save them the cost of making new ones. I'd be happy with a new updated HMD with no godrays and better FOV whilst still using the existing Touch Controllers.

Although if they did update the controllers I would hope they would make the handles wider and thicker for bigger hands and also the menu button sometimes gets knocked by accident in frantic games like Robo Recall, especially when beginners are using it like my friends. So I think they could move the menu button to the top so it's not accidentally knocked.

But other then those two minor things the Touch Controllers are perfect and I hope they continue to use them for the next 10+ years.

Vive wand track pads are bad. Steam Controller track pads are bad. I even disable laptop trackpads and use a real mouse (or pen/touch for my surface pro).

The main issue with track pads for VR is that they activate with any touch. No pressure required. You can't rest your thumb on them like you can a joystick. I tried playing Dark Souls 3 with a Steam Controller, sometimes while moving to press the back button my thumb would slightly brush against the edge of the trackpad, and my right hand weapon would toggle. Argh!
Without long term proprioception training, exact placement in the centre of a trackpad while blind (to real life) in VR is difficult.
