Remember when Microsoft were just an evil software/service company?

Remember when Bill Gates literally was "the devil" that was ruining the computer industry by squashing innovation?

Remember what happened once the xbox and then live were released?

Remember how that totally changed the landscape of gaming?

Remember how the xbox controller was the first controller to really standardize pc "gaming" for the masses?

To all those angry mob out there that are hating on Oculus right now, just look around. Do you see an xbox controller? Yes? Well maybe you need to swallow that self righteous pill a little deeper!

VR is going to succeed with or without Oculus. Lets just assume that oculus were going to take 5 years to reach their dream goals. In that time many big name companies would have stolen the market. Imagine the alternatives, a Sony device that limits to console gaming? Valve,h ave you ever used the steam SDK? Google, you want to talk about adverts and privacy...? A 3rd-party manufacturer that pushes a product to market in the space of a year? Apple, it would look stunning, but mac/iphone only?

Who else is there realistically that Oculus could have partnered with...

I agree... Very disappointed with all the oculus bashing!

So I take it you own an xbox controller then seeing as though you brushed over the actual point of the thread.

The internet was built on adverts and selling of data. Without big companies peddling their "free" services the internet would still be in the stone ages. Money makes the world go around, without a means to make money the money makers will go elsewhere. If the money makers went elsewhere well wed all still be using dial up modems.

Facebook is just another company with another bad rep, times change, opinions change nothing is concrete.

WTF, I was agreeing with u..

And no I don't own either an xbox or controller

No worries... there's a lot of mad people out there at the moment. I don't get it, this is huge for VR.. I think FB are playing the long game with this and will leave Oculus largely independent to create the original mission of VR gaming experiences. And then use the technology for other applications once it has mainstream support.

Yeah, gfwl was pushed and it sucked big time.

It dumbed down gaming as we know it. QTE, regenerating health in FPS. Shitty console ports...

No, and I never intend to use one.
I'm perfectly fine with KB and mouse thank you. I will always prefer the plethora of keys and the accuracy of a mouse!

So are you done with your self-righteous tantrum?

Nope I am not done.

Whether you like it not certain actions by certain companies have shaped/accelerated the landscape as we know it. If it were not for the likes of gamespy and early multiplayer hubs, services such as xbox live would have not arrived as quick. If it were not for xbox live, multiplayer gaming as a whole would have not developed as quick. If it were not for multiplayer gaming then perhaps this reachable vision of VR we have now would not even exist for another 10 years. Lets be honest, the end goal is to make the matrix, and without being connected, its only going to have a limited appeal to a limited set of users.

Lets not forget that the likes of Facebook and Apple/Google in conjunction revolutionised the use of mobile devices; which in turn revolutionised the gaming industry with casual; which in turn revolutionised the "hardcore" scene such as Oculus. Everything is connected with each other and as with most things you don't get one without the other!

Without that mobile revolution which was spurred on by social networks (such as Facebook) there would be no mobile screen tech to start this VR frenzy in the first place!

No, I think I'll take my fully anonymized metaspace paid for in Bitcoin and the occasional generic advertisement targeting 20-somethings, thanks. There's nothing to gain in your scenario and everything to lose.

FaceBook want VR in every home, and thats currently what we want.

When it is, then they will be able to adapt it to their evil designs, but we all get VR that much faster. So bring it on.

Also FaceBook itself isn't going to leave a lasting legacy, it's just some poncy social site but VR will leave a dent on history for all time. It's a legacy.
