Because they weren't sure how many orders they were going to get, and like to give ranges so if it's a day late getting to Ukursk they don't have people bitching about it. But the hints are all there that they have plenty - they've been almost cocky saying to judge them by the Touch shipping, last week they really opened up giving free Touch dev kits for developers, their retail partners suddenly started saying they were ready for a December 6 launch.
Also note that they never gave later estimated ship dates until some time in November - now if you order, the date range is the 16th through the 21st, so everyone who preordered until then is in the first batch.
I believe this is only happening right now, for those who preordered the Rift, back in like...January. The meme above is a pretty accurate representation of my initial though when I saw these threads about people getting Touch orders processed...then I noticed they all preordered the Rift.
I did! And you're right, my Rift was a day one pre-order. I was farther back in the queue though due to website issues (30+ minutes) so I imagine a lot of people will be getting processing emails soon.
UPDATE: Just verified my CC was charged for the Touch order this morning. My order status on Oculus.com still says "Pre-order" however, with the same estimated shipping date range (6th - 15th), so nothing has changed there yet.
That's funny because for the Rift I intentionally waited for Oculus to say : now we have stock so expect shipping in 2 days and I ordered a Sunday and got my Rift on Tuesday midday. This time I waited as I wanted to receive it near Christmas so I ordered 10 days ago (Nov 18), nearly too early as delivery is estimate between 16 and 21 December 😉 Yeah, zen 🙂 it will come when it will be the right time 😉
