True black smearing in DK2

After the EULA post, i started to browse treads in reddit and i found about this problem, i would like to know why it happens. It has to do with the AMOLED matrix? for example, the capacitor in the pixel circuit delaying the pixel due to charge time? or what is the reason of this problem.

I know someone posted the other day about a potential problem with OLEDs in dark scenes - something to do with almost a mist effect.
Well, don't know if you've noticed, but load up the Oculus World (Tuscany) demo and have a look at the overhead beams in the house. Move your head left to right or in a circle, and there is what I can only call a smear. It's that bad, it's almost as if there are shadows being cast from a moving light-source.

We have a solution that can greatly reduce this effect in most cases. I'm not sure if we were able to get this into this release of the Oculus World demo. Check the menu for the 'Pixel Luminance Overdrive' options.

Posted here, if he's not sure, he needs to find out.

I'm quite sure this is a great step up over the DK1. It really surprises me that people are complaining so much about a few otherwise small issues in a development kit, when the original has the most washed out blurry screen known to man. I think the real problem is how much people bought into hype, and got their expectations raised too high.

I've been waiting for my DK2 with the understanding that this is still going to be far from perfect, but a good improvement over what I already have.

I'm still leaning toward (and hoping for) a software issue. Reverend Kyle on reddit said that Elite looked amazing. He hypothesized that black with little else= no smudge. Doesn't feel like a display thing. Plus..if it was something this bad, how have we not heard about it until now. Hasn't this screen finalized for a while now.

If we think about though, when was DK2 first revealed? Back in March correct?

The only demos that they showed in the reveal was Couch Knights and that Unreal RTS demo. Those didn't have much black. In E3, they demo'd again Couch Knights and the Aliens demo. I would think this would have been noticeable in the Aliens demo. The other demo was Lucky's Tale which didn't have much black.

Then in Anime Expo 2014, they demo'd the Sword Art Online experience. Those had a few dark areas as well with the battle with Asuna.

To tell you guys honestly, I think this is the hardware issue that Oculus referred to that they weren't able to fix in time for release of the DK2.

Exactly though. Alien would have been a perfect game to see this problem. It would be very obvious there. Not a word from anyone. Today after only a handful of people have spent very little time in the Rift, they're all reporting "eww, what's with the smudging?" It seems possible at least that it could be software related. Especially with all of the trouble they had getting the sdk ready in time. A man can dream, right?

The videos I posted barely do justice. It's about 10X worse in the headset, as both eyes are seeing it, and you have a 1080P image of it.

I love Oculus and understand that this is a developers kit, but honestly, in dark areas like this, it's worse than the DK1.... :?

Until you've tried it, it's a bit early to call this a "small issue". The people who've received their rifts are going to be diehard VR supporters who I'm sure want to be happy with everything. I wouldn't dismiss their concerns too soon.

Right..it's not something you wouldn't notice while demoing this somewhere else. Especially in a game like Alien. It sounds like something that sticks out like a sore thumb.

If you have tried it, and it doesn't bother you, then that's good, you can let it go by. However, if you haven't.....just you wait. It's really THAT bad! I for one don't think it's a small issue...

Have any of you new owners tested the screen to see how it performs when left running for a while? I suppose it's possible that the screen needs to "warm up".

Is the smearing only noticeable when you have quick changes from dark to light areas? I saw someone say the ReverendKyle tried Elite Dangerous with it and since much of the game is dark away from the stations, it wasn't as noticeable when you have dark gradients closer to one another.

I can imagine it being a problem when approaching space ports though.

Guess I'll find out next week. First game I'll try will be Elite Dangerous.

This is actually good to know early on since the prototype my friend and I are working on will mostly be a dark scene. Either we completely change the lighting of our scene or limit the areas changing from light to dark or vice versa too quickly.

It's strange, it's not just a clear answer where it happens. But most noticeably it is in pitch black areas. After doing the Totoro Bus demo, and looking up at the dark black night sky, it was HORRIBLE, the black smeared over the trees a whole lot, like a major shadow effect. In that situation, the trees were not that bright either...
