UK Shipping Dates for software developers?

Hi everyone,

I ordered my V2 Dev kit on 21st July and by Oculus's delivery time frame I should have received it by now but it just says Pending and then; our order is awaiting inventory before it can be fulfilled. We will notify you when it's about to be shipped.

This is actually a very big problem, as I am a software developer, of which I did inform them of and that when ordering as we all know there is a timescale to every development project for use with the Rift before the commercial Rift is released.

How can I even get the three projects I am currently running to be able to integrate Oculus functionality if I do not have the development kit?

All this is going to do is reduce the amount of game and products that are available when the commercial Oculus is released and if I have to wait much longer I will be under more pressure have to take Sony up on their offer which I am not keen on due do certain contracts.

Is the delay due to many of the orders being taken up by hobbyists and not companies or people that will actually develop anything?

I thought it was called a Development Kit for that very reason and not instead called a Beta Kit.

Is there a UK timetable for my order to get shipped?

Thanks

We have already implemented the backend software side of the Rift into our projects but we need the Dev Kit so we can actually see what it looks like, as in a proper Alpha test.

If I get a showcase up and running for one of our projects so that our investors can come and see the progress we have made, how will they get an idea of what the VR aspect will be like on release with no VR equipment for them to view it through?

Last point, if a company has any doubts about when they can deliver, any doubts at all, then they should not put an estimated delivery time of 4 to 6 weeks, as that puts 6 weeks as potentially the latest it could arrive.

not if they put the word 'estimated' before it, it only means 'hopefully' and if all things go to plan. As I've said everyone who pre-ordered got it later than estimated and you are no different.

I have to ask why did you leave it till July if you are so far ahead with your software and attracting Sony's attention etc? Surely you should have been a day/week one order not left it till FOUR MONTHS after you were able to order? (pre-orders opened march 19th I think, you ordered over 4 months later... where was YOUR timeliness?)

Again, not being an ass am just curious why there wasn't the same amount of panic and vitality in your pre-ordering as there is in your quest for information?

Isn't that a question you should be asking whoever was in charge of securing your DK2, how could they not order it till 4 months after it went on sale IF your software was that far ahead that you need people to see it in October 2014? Especially as pre-July there was no guarantee of any estimated delivery date (it could have been 2015 after the initial batch for all you knew). Leaving it till July was always a risk if time was against you, and surely you must have heard of the slight delays in processing orders/stock? Aside from some countries being purposely held back, as far as I know the UK is good to go and you'll get yours inline with the delays everyone had. So as I originally said you should get it this month imo.

These are serious questions, because I am sure as hell confused by this panicked rush on one end, and the laid back attitude towards pre-ordering that made you leave it 4 months?

of course, you are free to ignore me, I am just curious it's not essential I know all the ins and outs of your business plan 🙂

We have been using the DK1 for our development so far but when we received the offer from Sony but only if we added VR support, we wanted to keep our options open so we ordered the DK2, to be used as a beta testing device and also a means to potentially attract new investors.

We would much prefer to use the Oculus Rift in our project instead of getting tied down to an external contract with Sony.

I just thought that the communication would have been better due to this being a Development Kit and not a Beta customer testing kit, without projects like ours and others are trying to make, the Rift if have less software support on commercial release.

It's kind on in their own best interest as well as ours.

If it's that important to have one ASAP you can pick one up on ebay or Gumtree for around £400 to £450 then sell it back on when you get yours direct from Oculus.
