Ups and downs, why I already hate and love my Rift (need help?!) :)

Hey everyone,

yesterday evening/night I finally got to try my new rift.
I haven't used any VR device for about 1 1/2 years but I've owned the dk2 and got VERY high expectations.
Sorry for the clickbait title but that perfectly describes my feelings right now

Here is a little review of mine about the rift.
I will try to keep it as short as possible.

Packaging:
The packaging is stunning and feels and looks high quality, just like I expected it to be.
Some people got worried because they had the feeling that they had received a used rift but I am 100% sure that
mine is brand new.

Setup:
This
was a b*tch to do because I've got several issues. First of all my
sensor doesn't notice ANY of my USB 3.0 ports. I've updated the driver
but gut bluescreens everytime I tried to plug it in. I reinstalled my
old drivers and, surprise, it still didn't work. I plugged the sensor
into a USB 2.0 port, which seems to work but I've already bought a USB
3.0 card, which is on its way right now. Furthermore I've got problems
because the driver for the xbox wireless adapter wouldn't install and I
had to download and install them manually. Setup took me over an hour. I
would have wished a more "plug and play" like setup but I guess it
could be my pc just trying to troll me.

The Fit:
The
comfort if fine, way better than the DK2 in my opinion. I've got BIG
glasses and I've feared that they wouldn't fit but they do!
The sweet spot is really easy to find and it almost takes no effort for me.
What
most people don't mention in their reviews is the smell! The smell of
the new DK 2 made me feel sick. I problem I don't have with the CV1
anymore 🙂

FOV:
The FOV is smaller than I thought it would be but I am ok with that. It feels like looking through a bullseye

Image:
The image quality is stunning! Way
better than I thought it would be. Everything is clear and readable.
The 3d is mind blowing and I had to laugh out loud a few times because
the demos felt so real.

Godrays:
Yes, they are there. Though I don't mind them. I can easily ignore them.

Red Tint:
This
kind of bugs me because I've had a little bad luck with that. There is
no red tint on the left display, however, the right display
is full of it. almost the entire right screen has red tint. Though it is just noticeable when the screens are fully black.

All in all the rift is an amazing piece of technology and Oculus made an awesome job developing this little piece of sexiness.
I would buy it again anytime.

BUT (and this is why I chose the title)
I fear that I've got a defetice unit.
This is the part where I need YOUR help guys and gals.

I've got 2 major problems.

First of all: I have no sound.
The
built in speakers sound like transformers on kokain and it doesn't
matter what I try, I can't get them to work. I've updated all drivers,
tried turning off every other sound sources and devices, tried turning
off the onboard soundcard, tried switching the rift to the standard
sound source, nothing helps.
All I can hear is cracking and not only
when there should be sound but also when there shouldn't be I can hear
some random crackles.

My second big problem is that I
think that my left display is broken. There is a line through the middle
of my left screen where everything above looks a little green-ish. I
can tell that it is only the left screen because if I close my left eye,
the problem is gone. If I close my right eye, I can see it clearly.
I made pictures with my Iphone, which I will attach to show you.

As
you can see, the right display (second pic) looks fine. However, there
is a line in the middle of the left screen (first pic) which also
differs the colours between both areas.

My questions:

Do you think the debug tool could fix that? Where can I load it?
Any
suggestions on how I can get the sound to get of my other headphones?
(Logitech g35) Setting them as standard device doesn't seem to work for
Oculus home apps.
Do you think I received a bad hdmi cable?
Do you think my left screen is broken and I will have to rma it?
Should I open a support ticket?

I
already LOVE my rift but these issues are killing the experience for me
right now. I hope that I can fix them with your support 🙂

Thanks for your time and support! 🙂

I think your sound issue is to do with your USB3 ports not being compatible. Did you run the compatibility tool before hand? https://ocul.us/compat-tool

What are you computer specs?

Also Oculus has a tool that can re-calibrate the screens so hopefully it will help solve your weird left eye issue.

Thanks for the reply 🙂
Actually I've fixed the sound issue a few minutes ago. I switched from USB 3.0 to USB 2.0. The compat-tool told me that my 3.0 ports are ok but like I said, my USB 3.0 card is already on its way.

Could you please tell me where I can get the tool to re-calibrate the pixels? I've heard of it before but i don't know what its called so I couldn't find it before.

Glad to hear you've fixed it, does sound like you have dodgy usb3 ports on your mobo!

If you've already emailed oculus support they should do it for you, you can only get it through oculus support 🙂

@RedBarron10 Windows 10 should come with the controller drivers. However, you can try downloading the Xbox Accessory app from the Windows Store and updating the controller. Also make sure the controller has fresh batteries and follow the instructions on how to pair the controller and the adapter.

If you have another PC somewhere (A friends/relatives?) it might be worth installing it there just to see if there is a difference. Save you a lot of time trying to troubleshoot. If the problem follows then you know it's not your PC. Cyber, would there be an issue doing that as far as device tag and a different PC? Kind of curious myself.

That's what fixed it for me.  Though, I'm morally opposed to any more console related garbage than necessary, it appeared necessary.

IIRC, I had a similar issue myself recently in not being able to get my X-Box controller to sync. I had already been running my new Rift about a month and finally decided to hook up the controller. And my Windows 10 was up to date.
After a few hours of trying off and on with no success , I finally took a look over in the Windows 10 notification area ( lower right hand corner of the taskbar), and saw I had a notification. I clicked on it and it told me there was an updated driver for my controller available. I chose to install from there, and voila it synced then and all was well.
