Using dk2 for normal desktop everyday browsing

Hi!

I'm considering buying a DK2. I would like to know something about using HDMI to PC. I have a sony HMZ-T3 which I use by HDMI on my PC, on 2D mode, I can use it to see what I normaly do on a laptop: Desktop, web browsing, watch a 2D or 3D video...etc.

I would like to know if the Oculus DK2 can still do the same; I mean use it as a standard monitor as well to go on google chrome, watch a 2D video on VLC...and if I got something in 3D, then I switch it to 3D!

Please let me know! Or if there is even a more awesome feature on DK2, let me know as well!

Thanks a lot!

Yes. Virtual Desktop it's what you're looking for.

You can do all you do usually through the DK2 using it, and this is not a toy, I mean this is fully usable and perfectly fine. You can choose different way to display your screen, like in a theater, just flat, incurved, distance from the screen, etc. I often use it to watch Youtube, play games (even not made for DK2, so flat on the incurved 3D screen), etc. You can also play side-by-side or top-bottom 3D movies perfectly!

And it's currently free to use : http://www.vrdesktop.net/

This is without any doubt the best utility IMO. When I have to demonstrate VR I start with the demo scene followed by this.

If all you want to do is browse the web, SteamVR (available from Steam) has a Google Chrome browser in their VR home. It was pleasant to use.

Wow! thanks for your answers! Seems it would be a good choice for me. I'm looking for a bigger screen than the hmz-t3, and maybe more confort too.

I mean it was not bad to try at first, but it feels like you have a brick attached to your face. After half na hour , you wish to smash it to pieces.

I will buy DK2 this week-end, I may try some video games as well!

Thanks!

I will be honest, using the DK2 for normal desktop browsing is not the best idea. There are ways to sort of make it work, but it still won't come close to a nice monitor. Feel free to give it a shot and see how it goes, but please try to temper your expectations.

The main problem you'll face is clarity of text, reading small text like Emails is going to be an eye strainer, especially text to the edges of the screen it's out of focus so you have to turn your head a lot. It's fun for watching Video's and other stuff but not so much everyday browsing. Plus after some time your eyes get tired, I rest them at least every hour on long sessions, I'm an addict of Elite Dangerous lol so I can rack up some long hours...

I would wait till the cV1 is released. Virtual desktop is a very nice thing for the future hardware.
This is a good example, that shows you how it looks, with the dk2.

I hope we can preorder the cv1 soon, maybe in december..

I would save your money and wait until CV1.

The Dk2 does everything you want, but the resolution just isn't good enough to make it worthwhile unfortunately.

In any case, something that will be difficult to resolve with Desktop emulation and VR: for now you don't have any perfectly suitable solution to emulate efficiently the keyboard, as the Rift on your head prevent you to use the one you have. I still have to remove it to type anything like video name I'm seeking, typing document, etc. 😉

Mad to get DK2 as a standard monitor for browser or any computer stuff, or for viewing videos - awful resolution, it will do your head in. Wait until the new year
