VR vs 2D - VR Has a Long Way To Go

Yesterday I purchased a rather swanky Samsung KS7000 4K HDR 10 Bit TV (KS8000 in North America). It's not Samsung's top end TV but mid to high range. I traded in my 4K 28" ASUS monitor for this TV so I could take advantage of the Xbox One S and soon to be PS4 Pro HDR capabilities. My conclusion is that VR has a long way to go as 2D TVs are simply miles ahead in terms of visuals. I'm not necessarily just talking about how lovely 4K looks in comparison but more the HDR and colour spectrum which are miles ahead of current HMDs. The good news hopefully though is once VR headsets can catch up (although we could be waiting 10 more years) then I believe VR will have reached its full potential. I also have to state that much like trying to describe VR to those who've not experienced it the same can be said for HDR.

As a couple of examples - I watched a 4K youtube video (yes, not the best 4K quality but good enough) of some scenes of New York, having been there with the missus a few years back for my birthday. She remarked on the quality of the image and said it was almost like actually being there due to the high resolution, wide range of colours and lighting. I tend to agree despite the lack of full 360 degree viewing and 3D depth.

I've also been playing some Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 and can honestly say the HDR in Battlefield 1 (officially HDR supported)  using the Xbox One S up-scaled 4K is excellent and certainly creates much more believable lighting.  There's moments where you're flying a biplane into the sunlight above the clouds, it's breathtaking and could be considered a work of art - something I've never really experienced in VR. Bright light sources can make you almost squint which is an interaction with a TV I've never had before. The KS7000 has a HDR feature that can also add some HDR effects to unsupported content and a look at one of my Rise of the Tomb Raider 4K videos was simply stunning. I've gotten over the merits of 4K long ago with my monitor but the HDR is on another level. You feel the brightness of every light source and the reflection or casting on skin/materials is highly impressive.

So it got me thinking about the parallels between the two planes of VR and 2D content and I surmised that although lacking the immersive qualities of current VR the overall picture quality of current TVs offers a different kind of immersion that's unmatched - looking into a window of a reality rather than being in it at low quality where any belief is dispelled due to the poor (in comparison)  visuals. Perhaps it's not fair to compare the two as they are so far apart but the mind can only boggle that once VR displays are on the same levels as current high spec TV sets we will truly be able to fool the mind that we're someplace else in the real world - here's looking at you 360 degree 3D VR videos of the future.

It goes without saying native 4k will be reserved for older games. The hardware simly is no where even remotely close to good enough for most AAA games, at 4k.

It will be upscaled.

Right, but people assume "upscaling" is the same thing as on $5 DVD players and it's actually way more complex than that (as explained in the article). Some games will be running at around 1800P and others can use a checkerboard rendering technique that reduces pixel processing while minimizing the downsides of standard scaling methods. The end result is something not quite 4K native, but well beyond the quality of 1080P.

And this is why I still enjoy 2D games..  I have a 35" Acer 4k Monitor and a 49" KS8000 that hangs right above it. (I was running a 3x 28" 2K monitor before).

I just can't wait for the 4K@120hz that is coming out next year  I miss 120hz.

I played a little with the Rift last night for about an hour and was tired of it.  I hope the Touch brings new life to it.

Hey mbze430 try this video with HDR+ enabled and make sure the youtube is set to 4K playback and tell me what you think please?

fyi: if it took a full hour before you got tired, then that is a compliment towards the device, not an indication of a problem lol

I usually play the Rift for 1-2 tops, unless I find a new addiction that warrants 3-4 hours. I think I spent 5 hours straight with Albino Lullaby and Edge of Nowhere. And when I first started Skyrim I had a few 4 hour ventures.

But over time other priorities come along. I no longer judge a device by its ability to keep me away from real life for extended periods of time :#

Yeah I have seen that video before.  have the game too, but the game doesn't have HDR support... I've been playing that game non-stop for the past few months till I got to 97% completion, it's great.  I totally go back just to look at the HDR when it is finally patched.

@Zenbane
I wanted to say was I stop playing it and continue playing it in 2D mode.

I recorded the on PC when the game released when I had my GTX 980Ti,  but I wonder if the most recent PS4 version will have HDR support  added once PS4 Pro releases and if so where will that leave the PC version. I am reluctant to buy the PS4 game when I already own the PC version.

RotTR on PC is getting an HDR patch last I remember. But, AFAIK, there are no HDR PC games at all right now. Only HDR games are on the Xbox One S (about a half dozen games) and it seems PS4 just received some as well (I see Last of Us got a patch, not sure if any others).

I would imagine ... it will come out eventually.  I don't know of any games that does HDR right now, if it did.... i don't think I own it.  I just watch video and movies if they have HDR.

Once there are more material I will replace my living room with a HDR unit too.

Right now i mostly use the KS8000 for movies when I am in the computer room; noise maker.  When I am doing stuff and need some background noise lol.  I mainly play most of my games on the Acer.

Even with lower resolution u can't compare vr with other devices. Zenbane is right that no matter how fantastic the colors and quality are u still don't have a fraction of immersion as vr. Even with the great 2d games out there I'm gravitating more and more to vr. ONCE I get my touch controls then it's game over.
