Looking at the current state of available products and prices, I think you've asked this question a year too soon.
Of course, if by web-cam you mean something cheap and widely supported.

Also, it might be inconvenient, and this might prevent such an idea from becoming popular.
Not an Oculus hater, but not a fan anymore. Still lots of respect for the team-Carmack, Abrash. Oculus is driven by big corporation principles now. That brings painful effects already, more to come in the future. This is not the Oculus I once cheered for.

Yes. VR webcams are in development. Some exist now even. The recent democratic debate was broadcasted in VR, for example.

This thread has some good information/links to just about every 180/360 camera out there.

Spring of 2016 seems to be the time when a lot of these cameras are planning to go retail.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

Not all of those cameras are real-time though, and the ones that do offer that are in a much lower resolution "preview" mode. It'd be great to gather a list here of real-time solutions with their respective specs and price.

There are also solutions that involve something like a security camera, where a single VR user is driving the physical angle of the camera. I haven't seen anything that doesn't include a lot of latency though, so that type may never be practical.

http://360.tv/ is coming out in november, supposedly, not sure if it meets "semi-pro" requirements though, and also not sure if it's compatible with VR out of the box...

Just for the record we start low volume 180º stereoscopic VR webcam production with the first webcams to be announced in the early 2016
